England vs India 2014 - 1st Test: 6 broken records

Even though thefirstTest of The Big Test seriesended as a dull draw, courtesy a boringpitch, the contestat Trent Bridge, witnessed some historical records being re-written.And despite the games last two sessions being a mere formality, plenty happened in the days before making it amatch to remember. For those who still argue about the poor start to this series, it is only the third time India has managed a draw in the series opener in England and have gone on to win the series on all three occasions. The records that were broken in the 1stTest.All records are held highly and are not ranked.

#1 Bhuvneshwar Kumar - The epic

It will be an absolute lie to say that we did not expect the 23-year old seamer to come out as the best bowler of India after the match. But, how many would have had a gut feel that the Uttar Pradesh lad will be joining Wasim Akram as only the second cricketer to score two half-centuries, take a five-for and to have bowled the first over the innings in a Test match.

He also became only the fourth Indian to claim a five-for in an innings and have two 50+ innings in a Test and the first while batting at No.8 or lower.

Also, when Kumar ended the fifth day unbeaten, he had batted the third most number of balls at No.9 in Test history.

#2 James Anderson - The Number 1

One of the best swing bowlers in the world right now after Ravindra Jadeja’s scalp in India’s 2nd innings, became the highest wicket-taker in Test matches in England. The bowler equalled legendary England speedster Fred Trueman’s haul of 229 wickets.

The man who failed to hide his tears after he batted for 55 balls in vain to save his last Test, surely did this time. And what a way to do it.

In England’s first innings, he made people wonder if sacked Kevin Pietersen was on a secret mission with England cricketers as a batting consultant – Anderson was reverse sweeping the ball with full confidence in his fighting knock of 81. That was also his first fifty in any level of competitive cricket and the highest score from an England No.11.

#3 Last wicket partnership - The unbelievable

Had the English’s broadcasters made a similiar strike as on Kapil Dev’s iconic 175*, no one would have believed the partnership numbers of this match.

First it was Bhuvneshwar and Mohammed Shami who extended India’s dominance on the second day of the Test with their 111 run stand.

And then came England’s final pair of Joe Root and Anderson to not only take them to safety but nearly gave England a chance for a win with a mighty 198-run stand. The England pair erased memories of Ashton Agar and Phil Hughes’ 163-run partnership last year on the same ground.

On aggregate (313), it surpassed the previous record for most number of runs from last wicket partnerships in a match.

#4 Stuart Binny - The debutant

The Karnataka all-rounder’s inclusion in the side was criticized heavily and it became a customary weapon for people to target the team, as he was not used much with the ball.

After a disappointing outing in the first innings, he stepped up when the chips were down and steered India to safety with his maiden Test fifty on debut. He became the fourth Indian debutant to score a fifty batting at No.8 and also the first man to achieve the same in 62 years when Deepak Shodhan made 110 against the visiting Pakistan side at Eden Gardens.

#5 Murali Vijay - The surprise

When Kevin Pietersen called Murali Vijay as a “big threat,” to the home side, not many would have taken the former English star seriously. Murali Vijay displayed immense character and exhibited the skills that highlighted his debut against Australia.

He became the first Indian to score a Test century on the first day of a tour that enabled him to join the elite group of Indian openers to have scored a century in England.

The Tamil Nadu opener also became the fifth Indian to score a hundred and a fifty in a single Test outside the subcontinent since 1996. He joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who have done it thrice, with VVS Laxman and Virat Kohli.

#6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni - The keeper

When Indian skipper pouched on to the offering from Ben Stokes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar on day 3, he completed a rare feat of being involved in 600 dismissals in international cricket.

Earlier in the Test, his knock of 82 pushed his name next only to Mark Boucher as a wicket-keeper with more number of half-centuries. He equalled Alan Knott’s figures of 30 fifties in whites for England. This was also Dhoni’s 15th away 50 and only Knott is ahead of him.

For someone who is always targetted for his batting technique, this is more than a decent achievement.
