As darkness sets in and throws people in what seems like an never-ending abyss of hopelessness, they look around with desperately searching eyes for a ray of hope. All of a sudden, a cold breeze rubs over their shoulders and reveals a light in front of them. Radiating the light is the dark knight – the saviour who has arrived to dispel all fear and gloom. This was Chelsea’s situation pre-Mourinho.Spring didn’t hit London until it was when Jose Mourinho was appointed as the manager of Chelsea. After winning the Champions League with Porto, Roman Abramovic hired the Portuguese to steer the [oil tanker] ship of Chelsea. It was ideal – a very self-confident manager was brought in to manage a newly-rich club to glory.Claudio Ranieri, before him, tried and failed. However, Ranieri and Chelsea were like oil and water. It didn’t work because it wasn’t supposed too.But with Mourinho it did. He might not have won the much-coveted Champions League with the Blues, but he engineered them to two back-to-back Premier League titles. And what happened after that further demonstrated why these two are made for each other – they separated after a quarrel and then reunited some years later.Jose Mourinho and Chelsea are the football equivalent of Explosion In The Sky’s aptly named track, Your Hand In Mine – and here are reasons why. (Maybe, listen to the track while reading the article? It fits!)

#1 Cash-Rich

‘Money is my hand’s dust’

We start off with the not-so-romantic-but-genuine reason. Chelsea have a lot of money, even though they can’t spend it as freely as before because of the Financial Fair Play rules now.

Money can’t buy you happiness, but it does buy you things that can make you happy and happiness is the basis of any relationship – and the case isn’t any different here. During his time as Chelsea’s manager, Jose Mourinho has spent around 400 million pounds on new players – that’s 80 million pounds worth of spending each season.

And when Mourinho gets the players he wants, he becomes as happy as a kid with the latest video game. With Chelsea, he is not only allowed to spend, but also spend it on the players he wants as he has..

#2 Full control over transfers

I can sign whoever I like

At Real Madrid, the Special One wasnt happy. He was grumpy with the presence of Jorge Valdano hovering over him and giving him opinions on which players to sign and actually having the audacity to say no to Mourinho.

We all know what happened next. Jorge Valdano was sacked and everything was merry again, even if it was not for a long time. At Chelsea, he doesnt have that presence that makes him more uncomfortable at the club.

Roman, I urgently need to sign a Unicorn.

But, Jose

But? Alright, you are getting my resignation letter in a few-

Alright, alright. Relax. The Unicorn will be at your office by tomorrow.

I want it tonight.

Come on..

I am serious..

Alright. Anything you say. Was there anything else you needed?

Casillas severed head.

#3 Loan Army

Marco van Ginkel
Marco van Ginkel in currently on loan at AC Milan

Chelsea arguably have the best squad in the world that doesn’t play for them. They have an astonishing 26 players out on loan, including some very talented players and ones to watch out for in the future.

Marco van Ginkel, Nathaniel Chalobah, Patrick van Aanholt, Tomas Kalas and Brazilian forward Wallace are just some of the few talented names that Chelsea could cash in on if they are ready. It is from this loan army that two of Chelsea’s best players this season have arrived: Nemanja Matic (though he was sold and then bought back) and Thibaut Courtois.

Kevin de Bruyne was also a part of this loan army, but was let go by Chelsea – a decision which they might be regretting now given the Belgian’s form. Also, another highly talented player of this army, Eden’s brother Thorgan Hazard, was just sold on a permanent basis to Gladbach – but with a buy-back clause.

Chelsea could always use their loan army to get the players they want, either directly playing them in the first team or using them to get funds and buy someone from another club using that fund – both of which are very advantageous for Jose Mourinho.

#4 The fans love him

‘I am their God

For many Chelsea fans, the self-proclaimed Only One is the second coming of Christ. And why not? After years of dwelling the abyss of mediocrity, he came in and made them one of the powerhouses of Europe.

His influence on the fans is such that many turned against Roman Abramovic when he left – the same Roman who is the real cause of their rise in the first place.

Fans loving a manager is perhaps the biggest non-monetary related reason for the manager to be the perfect match for the club. At Real Madrid, all was going well for Jose Mourinho until he created a division among fans.

One section was pro-Mourinho and the other turned against him. In the end, it was the anti-Mourinho fans that got their way and the Portuguese had to leave the club on a sour note. This happened because of his treatment of club captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

At a club like Real Madrid, where some players have spent their entire lives, there are always players who have a big influence in the dressing room and Casillas was one of them. However, at Chelsea he doesn’t have that problem because..

#5 Players are devoted to him

Mou’s Puppies

Chelsea is basically Mourinho’s club. He moulded the team to what it is today. Most of the long-term players of the club – Petr Cech and John Terry – were made big players by the former Inter manager himself.

Didier Drogba: “Jose just told me that the Sun rises from the west.”

Petr Cech: “But doesn’t it rise from the east?”

John Terry: “If Jose says west, then west it is.”

The former Porto tactician can do anything he wants at Chelsea. A change in the line up in a way he wants? No problem. That’s how it will be, and no-one would dare ask him anything about it.

The most perfect example would be him replacing the long-term post-guarder Petr Cech with Thibaut Courtois. When he did the same at Real Madrid, it ultimately cost him his place on the hot seat. Whereas, in London, this didn’t create the slightest of waves in the English media – let alone in the dressing room.

The reason for this is simple. In Real Madrid’s manager history, Mourinho’s stature was like that of a Paedocypris progenetica fish in an ocean – a small fish among the big ones. However, he doesn't have to face the same problems at Chelsea because he is..

#6 Biggest name in Chelseas managerial history

A winner

Make no mistake here, Jose Mourinho remains the biggest manager to have managed Chelsea. He might not have won the Champions League with them – a feat that was achieved by only Roberto di Matteo – but back-to-back Premier Leagues in his first stint put Chelsea on the global map, and he was the mastermind behind them.

There are arguments that he had a lot of money at his disposal to win those trophies, but so did Claudio Ranieri.

Having money and knowing where and how to spend it are two different things entirely. One thing that can never be taken away from Mourinho is that, firstly, he is sure of what system he wants to play and, secondly, what type of players are needed for the system to function efficiently.

And hence he almost always makes the right decisions in the transfer market because the player he buys perfectly fits his plans. Many were surprised when he signed Cesc Fabregas as they thought he is not the Mourinho-type player. However, it’s now crystal clear for what purpose he was signed.

A look at Chelsea’s signings history under Mourinho will show that he has almost always made the right decisions. And it is for this reason he has been Chelsea’s most successful manager of the modern era in the league.

His presence in Chelsea’s history is mammoth and hence no player – not one – could go against him, just like how it was with Sir Alex Ferguson at United. It is this presence that forced Abramovic to heal the relationship with him and re-sign him with the club. This also gives Mourinho..

#7 Full backing from the owner

Best Friends Forever

Jose Mourinho is figuratively the second owner of the club. After being disgruntled with each other, the Russian oil tycoon made up with the Special One like a couple who broke up and then made out and patched up again. In this case, the made out part was when the former gifted the latter a Ferrari.

In the time interval of Jose Mourinho’s absence at Chelsea, Abramovic hired and fired more managers than he changed clothes. After much chopping and chapping, he realised that in this rough and cruel world, it is only Jose Mourinho who could manage his team to glory.

In his first season of his second stint, the Portuguese failed to win trophies. Under normal Chelsea circumstances, Mourinho would now be in the USA enjoying with his family and living on the money obtained from contract termination fee. But, at the moment, he’s not only at Chelsea, but his job couldn’t be any more secure.

The way things are right now, it won’t be surprising if Mourinho isn’t sacked even if Chelsea fail to win silverware this season.

Maybe, Chelsea is indeed Jose Mourinho’s Gotham.
