Manchester United 2014 end-of-season player ratings

In a forgettable season where Manchester United has left everyone associated with the club disappointed and dejected, here we look at the performance of every player to turn out in a red shirt this season - from standout performers like Rooney, De Gea and Januzaj to others who have frustrated like Ashley Young, Cleverley and Fellaini.

#1 David De Gea - 8/10

Continuing on his improvements and impressive performances from last season, the young Spaniard has gone on to another level and has been one of the best goalkeepers across Europe this season.

He is no longer the error-prone keeper he was when he first arrived from Spain a few years ago, and is now a commanding presence in the six-yard box which has been the only positive in an otherwise leaky United defense that has shipped goals for fun this season.

His stellar performance came in the Champions League home leg against Olympiokos where he made a superb double save to keep United in the tie and eventually helping them advance through to the next round.

#2 Patrice Evra - 5/10

Following United's failure to sign Leighton Baines in the summer, Patrice Evra has been the only automatic left-back choice for David Moyes this season. And although his performances going forward in support of the left winger has been decent, its his defensive frailties that has left United let down on many occasions.

Even with his stupendous goal at the Allianz Arena in the second leg against Bayern Munich, he was the main culprit in all the three goals that United conceded following that strike.

With the Frenchman's current contract due to end in the summer, his future at Old Trafford still remains in doubt.

#3 Phil Jones - 6/10

Dubbed as the future United captain, the Englishman's determination, versatality and desire is unquestionable. However, his tenacity to win every challenge has often ended him being at the receiving end. Most recent occasion was when he tried to win the ball off a corner in the match against Hull at Old Trafford and had to leave the field immediately due to a shoulder injury.

This has happened more often than he would have liked due to which he hasn't had any consistnt run of games during the season.

Nevertheless, a great prospect for the future who is definitely going to get better with time.

#4 Nemanja Vidic - 6/10

The reception that the United captain received from the stands when he was called upon on his last home game against Hull last night displays the special place he aquires in each United supporters' hearts.

Although he has not been at his vintage best this season, but his fearless presence to win every ball on the field has always made the difference with young defenders constantly learning from the great Serbian.

The goal he scored at Old Trafford to give United the lead against the current European Champions truly portrays his leadership qualities. Moving on to Inter Milan from the next campaign, every United supporter must feel indebted to the service that one of the best ever Premier League defender offered.

#5 Chris Smalling - 4/10

Have been rotating between the right back and the center back role without being given enough consistency in either of the roles to flourish.

With a doubt still remaining on his ability to play at the top level and with a new United manager to come in for the next season, it remains to be seen if the Englishman will be a preferred choice at United or not.

#6 Rio Ferdinand - 4/10

Once a rock at the Old Trafford, the English defender is now a mere shadow of his former self. After starting off the season with decent performances againstSwansea, Liverpool and Chelsea, he committed some glaring errors in the consecutive losses against Manchester City and West Brom which has largely kept him out of the side since then.

With injuries taking toll on his fitness and his alleged fall out with David Moyes, his inclusion in the squad has been almost minimal. Another defender who looks to be going out of Old Trafford in the coming season.

#7 Rafael - 6/10

In the same mould as Phil Jones where his tenacity and exuberance to win every ball often ends him being at the receiving end of tackles, he, too, hasn't had any consistent run of games during the season.

Constantly in a learning phase, the Brazilian is decent going forward but lacks the required composure at the back which lead to unnecessary free-kicks and penalties.

Nevertheless, another player who is going to get better with experience and someone who United would definitely want to hold on to.

#8 Jonny Evans - 4/10

Another inconsistent United defender who has been in and out of the team after failing to impress the boss and the fans on a consistent basis. With Vidic and Ferdinand now taking the backsat at Old Trafford, a lot was expected from Evans to drive the defense this season.

His performances, however, have not been of the quality required at the Premier League champions which has led United shipping away goals, especially at Old Trafford.

His future, as of now, is secure at Old Trafford. However, for how long the situation remains the same is something to ponder upon.

#9 Alexander Buttner - 6/10

Have recently got some run in the team while Evra was injured for a couple of weeks. Impressed heavily in the home tie against Bayern Munich where he came out top in the duel with Arjen Robben. Was unlucky to miss out on the second leg with Evra returning from injury.

Looks much sharp in defense than Patrice Evra and, with Frenchman looking for pastures new, he is an automatic choice to fight for that starting berth in the first season in the coming campaign.

#10 Antonio Valencia - 5/10

Have been used either as a right winger or a right back by David Moyes throughout the season. Have shown glimpses of improvement from his dismal display last season but still lacks that consistency in delivering the final ball in the box.

But with other wingers, like Young and Nani, who have been even more dismal this campaign, the Ecuadorian has got a lot of opportunities in the first team, especially due to his versatality and work rate.

Whether he remains to be in the long term plan of the incoming manager at United is a different issue altogether.

#11 Tom Cleverley - 3/10

With Paul Scholes retiring last season, the mantle was on the young shoulders of Tom Cleverley to take on the reigns in the United midfield alongside Michael Carrick.

The England international was given ample opportunities by David Moyes to showcase his abilities, but unfortunately for United and himself, he failed to make any sort of telling impact through his performances.

With United almost certain to sign atleast a couple of central midfielders in the coming transfer window, the future for Cleverley at Old Trafford looks really bleak.

#12 Michael Carrick - 6/10

One of the major reasons of Uniteds decline this season has been the inconsistent form and fitness of Michael Carrick. After making a slow start to the season, the England international was out injured for the entire busy Christmas period where United desperately missed his accurate passes.

And even after coming back from injury, the midfielder hasn't been able to replicate his stupendous consistency and form of last season where he, along with Van Persie, were almost unplayable.

However, one noteworthy performance, where he showcased what he is really capable of, was against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford where he dealt with a world class midfield almost single handedly.

#13 Nani - 3/10

The Portuguese international, who signed a new four-year deal this season, has made only eleven appearances in the league owing to his inconsistent form and fitness. And even in those limited appearances, he hasn't been able to impress the United faithful in any way.

Another player who might or might not fall into the plans of the new incoming manager at Old Trafford.

#14 Adnan Januzaj - 7/10

The 19-year-old forward has been the find of the season for Manchester United. Such were his performances in the pre-season tour that David Moyes had no choice but to instill him directly into the first team squad.

Full of confidence and ability, the Belgium born youngster shows the glimpses of young Cristiano Ronaldo weaving his magic at Old Trafford wings.

He has already played at a number of positions coming in from wide left, right and also playing off the main striker. After securing his long-term services in September, the future seems bright for Januzaj at Old Trafford.

#15 Ashley Young - 2/10

Easily the worst United player this season whose poor performances and diving antiques have given him the headlines for all the wrong reasons. With United now securing the services of Mata from Chelsea, and a couple more midfielders expected to arrive at Old Trafford in the summer, the England winger is almost certain to leave Old Trafford after this season.

#16 Marouane Fellaini - 4/10

Signed from Everton on the last day of the transfer window to provide the much needed steel in the United midfield. However, it has been a dismal debut season at United for the Belgian who has lacked the confidence to boss the midfield as he used to do in the Everton colors.

Have done fairly well in winning the aerial duels in the midfield, but its his ball retaining capabilities and goal scoring that has come into serious doubt in the current campaign.

Needs a lot of improvement if he is to impress the new United manager and the fans in the upcoming campaign.

#17 Ryan Giggs - 7/10

Started the season as a player and ended as a player-manager of Manchester United. What else can be said for the Welsh wizard.

Even though he was used sparingly by former United manager, David Moyes, Giggs impressed everytime he was called upon for his duties. Most remarkable was his midfield masterclass in the second leg turn around against Olympiakos at Old Trafford.

Was made the interim manager after David Moyes was sacked in late April and played a cameo in the last hime game against Hull where he even assisted a goal. Whether he decides to finally hang his boots this season is a question everyone is seeking an anser for.

#18 Shinji Kagawa - 5/10

Its his second season at Old Trafford and fans have still seen only the glimpses of his talent. Although he has always been played out of position on wide left because of the form of Wayne Rooney, the Japanese international has been highly inconsistent in form which has kept the manager always in doubt about his selection.

The fans are desperate to see the best of Kagawa on a consistent basis. His future, though, has been put into real doubt after the signing ofJuan Matafrom Chelsea who plays in the similar role behind the main striker.

#19 Danny Welbeck - 5/10

Started the season by scoring as many goals in his first game as he scored in the entire campaign last year. Struggled for form and fitness until December when an injury to Van Persie offered him an opportunity for a consistent run of games in the side.

He grabbed that with both hands where he scored six goals during the busy festive period. But with only 9 goals and 1 assist throughout the campaign, there is still a lot of room for improvement for the young forward. His glaring miss against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford questions his big match temperment as well.

#20 Javier Hernandez - 4/10

The Mexican has found himself lowest in the pecking order of Uniteds strikers where only injuries to either Rooney or Van Persie has offered him any chance in the first team.

But, to be fair to the manager, with only four goals in twenty three appearances in the league, hehasn't been anywhere near to his previous campaigns.

And now with talks of Cavani to be linked with United, and despite him being the fan favorite, the 'little pea' future at Old Trafford looks even more bleak.

#21 Robin van Persie - 6/10

Apart from Carricks inconsistent form and fitness, another major reason for Uniteds downfall this season has been the injury to their talismanic striker Robin van Persie which has restricted him to only twenty league appearances this season.

That inconsistent run of games has also affected his goal scoring exploits where he managed only twelve league goals for the season.

However, the rumors of Luis van Gaal to be named as the next United manager can only help the Dutch forward in the upcoming campaign. Moreover, his partnership with Rooney and Mata is what everyone is waiting to witness in the coming year.

#22 Wayne Rooney - 9/10

World Class a word best suited to define the England strikers performances in the red shirt this season. After a summer of turmoil over his proposed transfer saga to Chelsea, David Moyes stayed put in securing the services of Rooney and helped him re-discover his best form.

With seventeen goals and ten assists in the league, he has been by far the best United player this season. After being labeled as second fiddle to van Persie in the summer, Rooney took on the mantle at the start of the season and re-asserted his authority as the Uniteds talisman.

He signed a new four-year-deal with United in February that would certainly keep him at Old Trafford during his peak years and stamp his authority even further in the United folklore.

#23 Juan Mata - 6/10

One of the major task that David Moyes did in his short stint at Old Trafford was to sign Mata from Chelsea in a club record transfer fee.

After a slow start to his United career, the Spaniard started to finally find his feet at Old Trafford in the latter stages of the campaign and showed glimpses o talent that made him Chelsea's player of the year in the previous two campaigns.

He is no doubt a world class talent which every manager would love to have in his squad. And it is his partnership with Rooney and Van Persie, on a consistent basis, that everyone wants to see at Old Trafford.
