Top five Premier League goal celebrations

Srihari

A couple of weeks back, Mourinho made disparaging remarks about Samuel Etoos age. And what did Etoo do after he scored a goal? The Cameroonian who turns 33 on Monday, saw the funny side of it as he ran to the corner flag, before imitating an elderly man. All of which, got me thinking, was this one of the best choreographed celebrations the League has witnessed? Or have there been something better? Here are my top five Premier League goal celebrations. If you feel that there are some better, just post in the comments below.

#1 Bullard gives Phil Brown a taste of his own medicine

In December 2008, Hull City were 4-0 down before half-time at Manchester City. Phil Brown, who was the coach at the time decided that something had to be done. So, instead of going into the dressing room, he made the players stay on the pitch and started blasting them in front of a packed Etihad crowd.

As fate would have it, the very next year, at the same venue, Jimmy Bullard scored the equalizer and with Brown in the dugout, the midfielder decided to recreate the scene from 11 months earlier. His manager certainly saw the funny side of that as he said “the whole thing was timed to perfection.”

#2 Why always me?

There are few players that capture the imagination quite like Mario Balotelli. The Italian was hounded by the press in England and was followed everywhere. After reports that the fire crew were called to the Italian’s house, on the eve of Manchester City’s 6-1 humiliation of United, the camera was well and truly on him on the pitch.

So, after he scored the opening goal, he decided to lift his shirt and let the world know what he was going through. Nothing new here, but in fact there was. Balotelli decided to showcase to the world his inner-Cantona. The message under his shirt read: “Why always me?” How do you top that?

#3 Point to prove

There have been countless occasions in which we have seen players point to the back of the shirt to make a point. The point being, they deserve to be in the starting lineup. But, when he scored a goal against Manchester City, David Ginola, then of Aston Villa had a different point to make.

His manager, John Gregory, was quoted as saying that the Frenchman was "carrying a bit of timber”. So, what did Ginola do after scoring the equalizer? He removed his shirt and summoned his Incredible Hulk-esque impression for the cameras, proving once and for all that, he wasn’t carrying any timber at all.

#4 Art on a football pitch

One of the most famous football celebrations have been the ones in which the players jump upside down and give their best gymnastic impressions. Lomana LuaLua, during his time at Newcastle and Portsmouth perfected the art of doing a back-flip. He made it his customary celebration.

But, while LuaLua isn’t on this list, Nani is. Although LuaLua brought it to England, Nani perfected it. A practitioner of Capoeira, a dance form, Nani has showcased his dancing ability on countless occasions and took the art of goal celebrations to another level. Another reason he is on this list is that unlike LuaLua, Nani has never been injured whilst doing a celebration, which is quite an achievement.

#5 The Legend of Zorro

There have been plenty of people who have tried lots of different goal celebrations, but few have made the impact that Facundo Sava made at Fulham. Although he made only 27 league appearances and had a paltry six goals to show for his efforts, he will always be fondly remembered by Fulham fans.

And that was for his unique goal celebrations. Whenever the Argentine scored, he would reach for his sock, pull out a mask and well, the rest is obvious. And just for a little while, there was a legend at Craven Cottage.
