Footballers who have taken up the Ice Bucket Challenge

In case you are one of those few people who are still not sure what exactly the Ice Bucket Challenge is, and how does it work, and why are people even doing it, here is a brief gist for you: the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is kind of an internet wager where the person challenged has to dump a bucket of ice on his head within 24 hoursfrom the time of the challenge, or else donate$100 to the ALS Association in the United States.Fromentrepreneurs to CEOs, to movie stars, and even footballers have been part of the newsocial media hit campaign, and in this slideshow, we talk about those footballers:

Challenged by: Former Manchester United teammate Darren Fletcher

Nominated: Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and rapper Lil Wayne

Cristiano Ronaldo was perhaps the biggest name in football to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, and then went on to name singers Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and rapper Lil Wayne as his three nominees for the challenge. The Real Madrid star already has connections to the industry!

#2 Darren Fletcher

Challenged by: Former Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes

Nominated: Former Manchester United teammates Wes Brown and Cristiano Ronaldo

It was Ronaldo’s former teammate Darren Fletcher who challenged him to the Ice Bucket Challenge after agreeing to have two buckets of ice cold water poured over his head following a nomination from Paul Scholes.

#3 Marcelo

Challenged by: Canadian footballer Kaylyn Kyle

Nominated: Brazil teammate Neymar, Brazilian TV presenter Luciano Huck and Brazilian actor Paulo Gustavo

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo was challenged by Canadian soccer star Kaylyn Kyle (Watch her Ice Bucket Challenge here!), and he was pretty quick in accepting the challenge. He let his Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo do the honours of soaking Marcelo all in ice-cold water.

Challenged by: Journalist Andy Mitten

Nominated: Former Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes

Following a friendly match between Salford City and the Class of ’92, Gary Neville, who was earlier challenged by English journalist Andy Mitten to undertake the Ice Bucket Challenge. When asked if he was nominating former teammate Paul Gascoigne, he then went on to point his finger at Scholes who was right next to him, saying, “That little b**tard!”

Nominated: Former Manchester United teammate Darren Fletcher

After being nominated by Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, who is usually seen shying away from any sort of post-football activities, was sport enough to let his former Manchester United teammate pour a bucket of ice-water over his head.

#6 Neymar

Challenged by: Brazil teammate Marcelo

Nominated: Brazil teammate Robinho, Colombian footballer Juan Camilo Zuniga and One Direction star Niall Horan

Neymar was one of the latest footballers to join the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge after being nominated by his Brazilian teammate Marcelo. Before completing his challenge, the Brazilian star nominated his national teammate and idol Robinho, Camilo Zuñiga of Colombia who had previously fractured Neymar’s spine during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and Niall Horan, one of the members of the boy band called One Direction.

#7 Tim Cahill

Challenged by: New York Red Bulls teammate Connor Lade

Nominated: Football stars Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, Jermaine Defoe and American TV host Tina Cervasio

Australian footballer Tim Cahill was also one of the footballers to have taken the challenge, and he did it at the New York Red Bulls training centre in the United States, saying, “I accept Connor Lade’s ALS ice bucket challenge and I nominate Landon Donovan, Tina Cervasio, Tim Howard, and let’s see, one more ... Jermaine Defoe. Let’s do this!”

#8 David Alaba

Challenged by: Bundesliga footballers Anis Ben Hatira and Alexander Aschauer

Nominated: Jerome Boateng, Franck Ribery & Mario Gotze.

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba was a sport as well, taking up the challenge after being challenged by Hertha BSC footballer Anis Ben Hatira, and VfB Stuttgart loanee Alexander Aschauer. He then went onto nominate his Bayern Munich team-mates.

Nominated: Rio Ferdinand, Nigel De Jong and Thiago Silva.

Kevin Prince-Boateng did his part for the cause too, with a little bit help from his Schalke teammates, and then going on to nominate former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, his former AC Milan teammates Nigel De Jong and Thiago Silva.
