IPL Auctions 2014: 5 best bargain buys

Srihari

Yuvraj Singh was the most expensive player at the IPL Auctions 2014 when he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for 14 Cr Rupees. Dinesh Karthik came a close second, going for a whopping 12.5 Cr. But not all the best buys were expensive ones. Let us take a look at the five best bargain buys in the auction.

#1 Samuel Badree (WI)

Bought for 30 Lakhs by Chennai Super Kings

Although he made his international debut only at the age of 30, West Indian Leg spinner Samuel Badree has gone onto achieve great things since then. Not only is he a T20 World Cup winner, but with an economy rate of just over 5, Badree is one of the most economical bowlers in T20 at the moment. So, it certainly was a surprise when he went for his base price to CSK, a team renowned for making the best use of their spinners.

#2 Kevon Cooper (WI)

Bought for 30 Lakhs by Rajasthan Royals

After having a wonderful IPL last time around with the Rajasthan Royals, it was a surprise to the West Indian all-rounder back there again for his base price. His explosive batting and his clever bowling make him a player to watch out for this IPL.

#3 Baba Aparajith (IND)

Bought for 10 Lakhs by Chennai Super Kings

One of the most important reasons why Subramaniam Badrinath wasn’t retained or bought by CSK was Baba Aparajith. Ever since breaking through at the previous U19 World Cup, Aparajith has gone on from strength to strength. Not only is he a quality top-order batsman, but he is also more than handy with the ball at his hand. Having snapped up a quality replacement for just 10 Lakhs, it is no surprise that Badri was left out.

#4 Ben Dunk (AUS)

Bought for 20 Lakhs by Mumbai Indians

The Australian wicketkeeper-batsman will make his first appearance in the IPL on the back of a scintillating BBL 03, where he finished as the highest run-getter and led the Hobart Hurricanes side to the final. Although they lost it, the Australian showed his batting prowess at the top and with the absence of a quality wicket-keeper, he is certain to make an impact at the Mumbai Indians.

#5 Vijay Zol (IND)

Bought for 30 Lakhs by Royal Challengers Bangalore

The 19-year-old Maharashtra batsman, who is currently playing in the U19 World Cup for India is a promising prospect for the future. At just 19, he has almost played a dozen Ranji games for Maharashtra, including leading them to a memorable victory over Mumbai. The aggressive batsman is sure to blossom, with the likes of Gayle, De Villiers and Kohli showing him the ropes at RCB.
