List of victories by margin of 1 run in IPL history

Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Daredevils by one run in their first match of the eighth season of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. This was not the first occasion, however, when a team in the IPL has prevailed by a margin of just one run. Let’s list the IPL matches that were decided by a margin of 1 run since the tournament’s inception in 2008.

#1 Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai, 2008

The first occasion of a match being decided by a margin of 1 run was between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 21 May, 2008.

Kings XI Punjab had put up a score of 189/4 in the 20 overs batting first with help of Shaun Marsh’s 81 off 56 and Luke Pomersbach’s 79* off 50. Mumbai Indians had a decent start as all their top four batsmen scored 20+, which included Sachin Tendulkar’s 65 off 46. With regular wickets in the end, the hosts required 19 runs to win in the last over.

#2 Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers, Johannesburg, 2009

The second occasion of an IPL match ending with a margin of 1 run was in the second season in 2009 on May 17 in South Africa. The winning team was Kings XI Punjab again and on the losing side were Deccan Chargers. It was the 49th match of the season at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Kings XI Punjab set a target of 135 for Deccan Chargers with the help of 56 off 43 from Kumar Sangakkara. The chase looked quite difficult when Chargers were in need of 43 runs in the last three overs. Rohit Sharma held the key and got the equation to 11 runs to win from the last over. The over was bowled by Irfan Pathan.

Yuvraj Singh had taken a hat-trick in this match, his second in IPL history.

#3 Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals, Delhi, 2012

There was no such finish for two IPL seasons. Then, on April 29 in 2012 at Feroz Shah Kotla in a match between Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals, there was a dramatic finish. Rajasthan Royals were on the verge of an easy victory in chasing DD’s target of 153. They were 67 for no loss in 10 overs and 108/1 in 15 overs. They scored 9 runs in the 16th over, 11 in the 17th and 10 in the 18th. They required 15 runs off 12 balls (2 overs). The 19th over, however, turned the match. It was bowled by Morne Morkel who just conceded 3 runs while also taking the wicket of Brad Hodge.

12 runs were required off the last over bowled by Umesh Yadav.

#4 Pune Warriors India vs Mumbai Indians, Pune, 2012

The fourth victory by a margin of one run happened in the 2012 season, within four days of the previous one. It was Mumbai Indians against Pune Warriors India at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. It was a low-scoring match that ended with one of the most interesting finishes.

Mumbai Indians scored 120 runs in 20 overs with a loss of 9 wickets. In reply, the hosts collapsed to 47 runs for 4 wickets in the first 10 overs. They didn’t lose many wickets after that but just couldn’t reach the target. They needed 16 runs from two overs, but just four runs in the 19th over put the pressure back on the hosts as 12 runs were needed in the last over.

#5 Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Daredevils, Chennai, 2015

The win by 1 run for CSK in this IPL is the fifth time where a team won an IPL match by just 1 run. It is the first time since IPL 2012.

It was another dramatical finish. Daredevils were on the back foot when they lost 3 wickets for 39 runs in 5 overs chasing a target of 151 set by CSK. Albie Morkel, sent in to bat at No.3, was the only one who provided some resistance. DD lost regular wickets as only two other batsmen reached double digits.

In the end, 19 runs were required off the last over and the ball was with Dwayne Bravo.
