Most successful captains in T20 World Cups

Here is a compilation of the most successful captains in T20 World Cups in terms of the number of matches won by them.Special mention: Mahela Jayawerdene, Michael Clarke, Daniel Vettori, and Chris Gayle are captains who have won 6 games each so far in all the World Cups combined. Younis Khan and Darren Sammy are captains who, despite winning the title in 2009 and 2012 respectively, don't find a place in the list.

#4 Paul Collingwood

Collingwood led England’s campaign for the first three editions of the World Cup and managed to claim the title the final time, which was in 2010. It was a dramatic win since they hadn’t won any of their games in the group stages; however, they turned the tables around to win all three in the Super 8. England have won a total of 8 games under his leadership. They were ousted in the group stages in the inaugural World Cup, reached the top 8 in 2009, and were finally crowned champions in 2010 when they beat Australia by 7 wickets in the final at the Oval. Collingwood was at the crease to see them home. 2012 saw Stuart Broad take over the reins of the T20 side, and he continues to be their captain as they enter the 2014 World Cup tournament.

#3 Kumar Sangakkara

He was captain in the 2009 and 2010 editions. Sri Lanka have won a total of 10 games under his captaincy, and they were the runner-ups in 2009. He was pretty impressive with the bat, as well. He scored a dazzling 64 not out in just 52 balls in the final, but Sri Lanka could only manage 138 owing to others not contributing so handsomely as he did. Pakistan chased down the target with 8 wickets in hand.

Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming World Cup.

#2 Graeme Smith

South Africa have only gone as far as the semi-finals in World T20 tournaments, which was in 2009. Graeme Smith, who has led South Africa in the first three editions, is the second most successful T20 World Cup captain till date in terms of matches won. The Proteas have a total of 11 wins under his leadership. Opening the batting for them, he has given that electric start to the scoring more often than not. Now that he has retired, his services will be missed a lot.

In his absence, Faf du Plessis will be captaining the side this time around.

#1 MS Dhoni

Nobody has ever captained a T20 team for so long as he has. Starting with the inaugural World Cup, when he was surprisingly chosen to lead the side, he has been the captain of the Indian T20 team. He is the most successful captain of this era, having won all the top three ICC trophies, and he would look to add to his tally this time with a second T20 World Cup. If India emerge triumphant, he will become the first captain in the history of the game to hold all three titles simultaneously. India have won a total of 14 games under his leadership at World T20 tournaments.
