4 matches where Roger Federer came back from the dead

Roger Federer has produced some unbelievable comebacksOver a 16-year long career, Roger Federer has faced competition from several excellent players of his generation. We have witnessed some epic encounters involving Federer that have gone right down to the wire, and during many such encounters, the 17-time Grand Slam champion has found himself in a corner, trying to save a match from the jaws of defeat. And on a few occasions, the Swiss ace has risen from the dead to save match points and go on to take the match.Here are four instances where the 7-time Wimbledon champion saved one or more match points to keep the match alive, before going on to register a memorable victory.

#1 Roger Federer vs Stan Wawrinka, 2014 ATP Tour Finals semifinal

Facing off against his fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka, Roger Federer was down 4-5 in the third set. Both players had won one set apiece, and Wawrinka was serving for the match. Down 40-30, the 17-time Grand Slam champion stormed his way back into the contest by saving three match points before breaking the Wawrinka serve.

He saved one more match point in the tie-breaker before eventually winning the match 4-6, 7-5, 7-6.

#2 Roger Federer vs Leonardo Mayer, 2014 Shanhghai Masters 2nd round

Federer was up against Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the 2014 Shanghai Masters. The Swiss ace was trailing 15-40 in the third set while serving at 4-5 down, and he could almost taste the defeat.

However, he once again he proved why he is such a great champion as he saved not just those two, but three more match points (for a total of five) before clinching the match in the tie-breaker. Among those saved match points, Federer was rescued once by the net as well when the ball fell inside Mayer’s court after hanging on to the tape for a split second.

#3 Roger Federer vs Martin Verkek, 2003 Paris Masters

Federer was on the brink of losing to Dutchman Martin Verkerk in the third round of the 2003 Paris Masters. He was down one set and with the match heading into the tiebreak in the second set, Federer managed to save four match points and take the match into a third set. He eventually won the match 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.

#4 Roger Federer vs Gael Monfils, 2014 US Open Quar

The 2014 US Open was witness to a cracking match in the quarterfinals between Federer and Gael Monfils. The Frenchmen played some very good tennis to go two sets up before Federer came back to win the third set. Down 5-4 in the fourth set, the Swiss ace saved two match points and went on to win the set and the match 4–6, 3–6, 6–4, 7–5, 6–2.
