The first week saw plenty of action in both the men’s and the women’s draw. Top seeds did not have it easy as Roger Federer made an exit in the third round against unseeded Andreas Seppi, while Rafael Nadal was taken the distance by qualifier Tim Smyczek. The biggest shock in the women’s section came in the first round when Ana Ivanovic was knocked out in the first round by Lucie Hradecka.No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams progressed to the second week of the tournament without much difficulty. The Australian players impressed the most with their superb wins over seeded players.Here are some of the top moments from the first week.

#10 Novak Djokovic continues his good run

Novak Djokovic reached second week of the tournament without dropping a set. The Serb has progressed to his 23rd straight quarterfinal and takes on the big Serving Canadian Milos Raonic for a place in the last four.

#9 Madison Keys impresses

American teenager Madison Keys upsets No. 4 seed and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Saturday. After the win, Madison spoke about the pressure that she has been tackling for the past few months. In fact, she talked about the burden of being told that you are a great player before being able to defeat someone great.

“It’s tough sometimes in those moments where everyone is kind of telling you it will work out and things like that,” Keys said. “You don’t always believe them, and it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Maybe it won’t happen.’ But finally having that happen, it feels great, and it makes you really, really realize that people are telling you the truth, and it makes your confidence and your belief in yourself just skyrocket.”

#8 Cibulkova storms her way to the quarterfinals

Dominika Cibulkova displayed some fanstatic tennis to win a last 16 match to beat the twice former champion Victoria Azarenka, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The 2014 finalist has the game to go one better this time at Melbourne park.

“Today was extremely, extremely good match from my side. I would say it was a high level of tennis. The first set, the way I played, was just really, really – no mistakes. I was going for my shots and I was just doing the right things”, said Cibulkova after the thrilling match.

#7 Sharapova looks poised for another Grand Slam

Seeded No.2 in the tournament, Maria Sharapova eased into the last eight of the women's singles event and is all set to face Euginie Bouchard in the quaterfinal. What will be interesting to see here is how the young Genie plays against her idol. Another interesting thing would be to see the two most beautiful women in women’s tennis to battle it out for glory. We have been waiting for this one. Haven’t we?

#6 Back problems you say?

Brushing aside back problems and the Melbourne heat, Rafael Nadal made it to the second week of the tournament. He beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to enter the quarterfinals. With this victory, Nadal has proved everyone right and has definitely come back stronger than ever. After his back injury and couple of surgeries in the latter part of the last year, Nadal was off the court for a quite a few months but now as we see him, he looks in the best of form.

#5 Venus leaps as her resilience pays

Venus Williams sent back Italy's Camila Giorgi 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 to enter the Round of 16. She recovered from a set and 4-2 to beat when her back was against the wall. The elder Williams sister took out No. 6 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in a tight three setter to reach the quarterfinals after five years.

The past couple of years haven’t been great for Venus as she was fighting an auto-immune disorder. This victory can be seen as a comback as all her fans keep their fingures crossed and hope for her rise to the top again.

#4 Andy Murray

British No1, Andy Murray entered the second week after beating the only Indian in the Australian open, Yuki Bhambri.

He reached the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park overcoming Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-5 in a marathon match that lasted three hours and 32 minutes. The Brit looks to add Major No. 3 come next Sunday

#3 Defending champion cruises through the opening week

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka reached the quarterfinals without being tested thus far. He came through in four sets in his fourth round match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. He takes on Kei Nishikori in the last eight on Wednesday.

#2 Andreas Seppi upsets Roger Federer

Roger Federer lost to Andreas Seppi in the third round, who is ranked 46 in the world. The 17-time Grand Slam champion's loss in the second round or earlier at the Australian Open, was the first since 2001.

Federer looked in prime form coming into the Australian Open with a title at Brisbane under his belt.

#1 Ana Ivanovic\'s loss in the first round

The first big upset at the Melbourne park was that of former World No.1 - Ana Ivanovic. The No. 5 seed suffered a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to No. 142 Lucie Hradecka. Ivanovic seemed to be in charge of the match against Czech qualifier on Rod Laver Arena when she took the first set 6-1, but could not convert her good start into a win.

This came as a big shock for tennis fans and critics alike who expected that this could be Ana’s Slam after her amazing rise into the top-5 last year.
