Top 5: Highest partnerships in World T20

In its relatively short history, the World T20 has already produced some memorable partnerships.This will give you an idea that Twenty20 is not all about hard hitting, but also about building partnerships. Lot of class batsman are in the list.Let us take a look at the all-time highest partnerships at the tournament.

#5 Chris Gayle and Andre Fletcher

While chasing 170 runs for victory against Australia, the West Indies openers Chris Gayle and Andre Fletcher put on a 133-run partnership for the opening wicket at The Oval on 6th June 2009

West Indies went on to win the match by 7 wickets with 25 balls remaining.

#4 Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir

In the group stage match between India and England in the World Twenty20 2007, Yuvraj Singh murdered Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in the 19th over and recorded the fastest fifty in international cricket off just 12 balls and also become the first player to hit 6 sixes in Twenty20 internationals.

But much before all these happened, Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir has put on 136 run partnership for the opening wicket, which is the fourth highest partnership in World Twenty20 matches.

India went on to win the match by 18 runs after posting a huge total of 218.

#3 Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt

Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt's opening blitz set Pakistan up for a huge total of 172 against Bangladesh on 1st May 2010 at Gros Islet. Both of them scored 73 runs each for an opening partnership of 142 runs.

Pakistan went on to win the match by 21 runs.

#2 Chris Gayle and Devon Smith

Chris Gayle and Devon Smith had produced a 145-run partnership for the first wicket in the very first match of the inagural Twenty20 World Cup 2007 against South Africa at Johannesburg on 11th September 2007.

Gayle dominated highly the partnership by scoring 117 runs from 57 balls, where as Devon Smith's job was to give the strike back to Chris Gayle.

Herschelle Gibbs steered South Africa to a 8-wicket victory with an unbeaten 90.

#1 Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara

The Sri Lankan batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara head the list with a partnership of 166 runs for the second wicket against West Indies at Bridgetown on 7th May 2010. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by 57 runs.

With both the legendary batsmen retiring from the shortest format after the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup 2014, both of them will back themselves to win the title for Sri Lanka this year.
