Top 5 match stipulations for WWE Extreme Rules 2014

Arjun R

There are two things that the WWE fans look forward to after every Wrestlemania. The first RAW after the mega event, where story lines take shape and the first Pay-Per-View after Wrestlemania which perhaps sets the tone for the upcoming months. Speaking of the first PPV after Wrestlemania, WWE brings to you 'Extreme Rules'. A PPV that was once perhaps the cornerstone of ECW under a different moniker, namely 'One night stand'. An event so brutal that it could either make or break careers. The WWE took this extreme event under its wing after the dissolution of ECW in 2009 and has ever since made it as an annual show. They have toned down proceedings of late to suit their PG tone, which perhaps contradicts the whole intention of the PPV. However, with all that said and done, let us have a look at some of the match types that could feature in this upcoming PPV.

#1 Steel Cage match

This match type is perhaps in-sync with the Extreme rules PPV. The steel cage has made an appearance in almost all of the Extreme rules event over the years. In all likelihood, a title could be on the line in case the WWE decide to go with a cage match. So that would make Daniel Bryan an obvious candidate to feature in this match.

Superstars like Edge, Jericho, Batista, Orton, John Cena and Brock Lesnar have all contested in steel cage matches at this PPV. So in all probability, expect a steel cage match as the main event.

Rules are simple, the first superstar to earn a pin fall or submission or to escape the cage structure emerges victorious.

Superstars most likely to feature in the match - Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Batista Brock Lesnar

#2 Ladder matches

If there is one thing that the WWE keeps improvising at, it is at organizing ladder matches. Despite the absence of stars like Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy and Edge, the quality of ladder matches have never declined over the years. The Money in the bank PPV is a fine example of that.

The United States title or the Intercontinental title could be contested in a ladder match.

The WWE currently has a fine arsenal of athletes in Kofi Kingston, Christian, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler. If these mid and upper mid carders help pull off a strong ladder match, the PPV will certainly gain the necessary momentum.

The title or titles on the line will be hung up above the ring and the first superstar(s) to unhook the title wins the gold.

Superstars most likely to feature in the match - Dolph Ziggler, Wade Barrett, RVD, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston, Dean Ambrose

#3 Extreme Rules match

This is the last resort that the WWE will adapt if they intend to end certain rivalries. These are your typical make or break match ups. The WWE has toyed around with this idea before and will not be afraid to do it again.

Anything, literally anything goes in this kind of match up. Superstars will go all ends up to ensure that the opponent gets beaten to a bloody pulp and they are presented with an armory of weapons under and around the squared circle.

Chairs, Tables, Ring bells, trash cans, steel steps , kindle sticks etc are some of the props that come in to play in this match. It will certainly be interesting to see whom the WWE book under this match.

Rules are that you need to beat your opponent by either pin fall or submission. Besides this, you get to use all the above mentioned props and everything else that you want to get the job done.

Superstars most likely to feature in the match - Bray Wyatt, John Cena, Big Show, Triple H

#4 Tables match

The tables match has pretty much become a standard type of extreme rules match up over the years. The match involves a very slight amount of brutality and your aim is to put your opponent through the table to pick up the victory.

No pin falls and no submissions in this type of match up. Going with experience, the tables match generally end quickly and is handy in resolving one time rivalries. There have been two tables matches in the history of this PPV that were contested for the United States title and the Intercontinental title respectively.

Superstars most likely to feature in the match - Sheamus, Mark Henry, John Cena, Bray Wyatt

#5 Street fight

The WWE in all probability may stick to organizing a conventional street fight in its upcoming PPV. The rules are pretty simple. Pin falls and submissions are very much a part of the match, however the location is what makes all the difference. A superstar can brawl with his opponent all around the arena and the referee will tag along and make the count wherever it maybe.

The fans will particularly prefer this kind of match up as they get to see the superstars beat each other up-close and personal. CM Punk and Chris Jericho competed in a 'Chicago street fight' match in the year 2012. The match was hailed as one of the greatest street fight's in WWE history.
