Top 5 Replacements for Arsene Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to complete his 18th year in charge of the London club in September and will most likely sign a new contract at the end of the season. It can be safely said that this campaign hasnt gone his way as Arsenal were leading the Premier League rat race in December and were favourites to win the League but their happiness was short lived after a series of heavy defeats against the big teams left them battling for their trademark fourth position. Many Arsenal fans, including Piers Morgan, are now baying for Wengers blood and want him replaced by a new more competent manager who is capable on ending their long trophy drought. Here are 5 managers who have the skills to take on the Arsenal job.

#1 Jurgen Klopp

The Borussia Dortmund boss is one of the most respected managers in the world and will be the perfect man to fire Arsenal to glory once again. Arsenal have never been famous for splurging money on players but that shouldn’t be a problem for Klopp who built Dortmund on a shoestring budget and even managed to win back to back Bundesliga titles ending Bayern Munich’s monopoly over the German league.

The 46-year-old narrowly missed out on adding a Champions League final victory to his resume when his team were beaten by arch-rivals Bayern Munich in the finals of the competition. Klopp favours a sleek attacking style of football which will be perfect for Arsenal who have always played on the offensive under Wenger. The Arsenal board may have a problem securing Klopp as Manchester United are also targeting the spectacled manager to replace a certain Scotsman.

#2 Roberto Martinez

The Spaniard, who lifted the FA Cup with Wigan, is having a brilliant season with Everton and is the only manager in the Merseyside clubs history to not lose any of his first six games. Martinez doesn’t have access to a huge budget but has made some shrewd signings in the form of Gareth Barry, Gerard Deulofeu and Romelu Lukaku who have helped Everton remain in the top 5.

The 40-year-old has faith in young players much like Arsene Wenger and has gained praise for his faith in young midfielder Ross Barkley who is one of the Premier League’s breakout stars. Martinez is another manager who promotes free flowing attacking football which would be great for Arsenal but the Spaniard has to work on his defence as the Toffees were more secure at the back under David Moyes. Everton may not want to part with yet another manager but Martinez may find the chance to manager Arsenal, who have qualified for the Champions League every season, too good to turn down.

#3 Michael Laudrup

The Real Madrid and Barcelona legend lost his job at Swansea due to poor results but has great skills as a manager and is capable of managing one of the Premier League’s big teams. Laudrup had an incredible debut season at Swansea, unexpectedly winning the League Cup with the Welsh club. The 49-year-old has a good eye for talent which was displayed when he signed Spanish forward Michu, who fired 22 goals in his debut season for the Swans, for just 2 million. Other Laudrup signings like Jonjo Shelvey and Wilfried Bony have also become integral to the club.

Arsenal can benefit a lot under Laudrup whose Swansea side earned the nickname “Swansealona” after successfully adopting a passing style that was similar to the Catlan giants. Laudrup’s signature can be obtained easily by Arsenal as he is currently looking for a job but they’ll have to act quickly as QPR are also interested in the Dane’s services.

#4 Dennis Bergkamp

Every Gooner would love to see this legend back at the club again. Bergkamp spent 11 glorious years at Arsenal, winning a total of 10 trophies before hanging up his boots. The Dutchman gained some experience in coaching when he was made assistant manager of the Netherlands B team before moving to boyhood club Ajax to coach their youth teams. The 44-year-old is now assistant manager to former Netherlands team-mate Frank De Boer at Ajax but has always been linked with a return to the Gunners.

Bergkamp has plenty of experience with young players, much like Arsene Wenger, at Ajax who have one of the best youth set ups in the world. The Dutchman has been worshipped like a God by Arsenal fans, who have repeatedly called on Bergkamp to take charge of the club. The only thing standing in the way of Bergkamp and Arsenal is the Dutchman’s infamous fear of flying which could cause him to miss the teams European fixtures and pre-season tours.

#5 Patrick Viera

The former Arsenal fan-favourite is another ex-Gunner to be linked to the manager’s job at the London club. Viera, who was part of Arsenal’s famous “Invincibles”, spent nearly a decade at the club winning 11 trophies before leaving for Inter Milan. The Frenchman hung up his boots at Manchester City, who have made him the head coach of their youth squad also known as the Elite Development Squad.

Arsenal have had a tradition for exposing young players to first team football under Arsene Wenger and Viera can continue that tradition as he has got off to a flying start as the head of the Elite Development squad. The 37-year-old masterminded a 6-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich’s Under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League and took the City Under-19 squad to the last 16 of the completion where they were knocked out by Benfica. There is a high possibility of Viera jumping at the chance to manage his former club.
