5 reasons why Brock Lesnar deserved to break The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak

After two decades, the greatest streak in sports entertainment history finally succumbed at its final hurdle. One of the greatest feats in professional wrestling history ended this past Sunday night, when The Undertaker lost to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania his first loss at the grandest stage, to bring the curtains down on perhaps the greatest accomplishment by a sports entertainer, past or present. The wrestling world has been left shell shocked, like the eerie silence you experience before a storm. Since the event, many fans and former professional wrestlers have expressed their disgust and disappointment in the streak being ended, and then there have been others who feel Brock Lesnar didnt deserve to be The one ending the streak.Im one of the biggest Undertaker fans in the world. When I was 5 years old, I heard about this zombie esque creature; some said he had ten lives while the others called him the devil himself. I was so fascinated that I started watching professional wrestling just to watch The Undertaker perform. I know there are millions just like me, who got into professional wrestling because of The Phenom. While I too was upset about the streak ending, unlike the rest, I dont think Brock Lesnar was a bad choice. As a matter of fact, other than the previous WrestleMania where Punk faced The Undertaker, I believe Lesnar was the only other option to end the streak. In this article, I provide you with five reasons why Brock Lesnar deserved to The one ending the streak.

#5 Lack of other options

While I agree that the streak should have been preserved, I also believe that if it is the right thing to do, then the streak should be ended by someone who will do justice to it. Last year was the very first time I thought I wouldnt mind the streak ending, when CM Punk faced The Undertaker. It wouldve been the passing of the torch, from an old warrior to the new one. Other than Punk, Lesnar is the only viable option WWE had. The WWE fans wouldnt have minded if the streak had come to an end at the hands of Shawn Michaels or Triple H, but why is that? What significance would such an honor have to these two who were done with their careers? Lesnars victory has made him a bonafide legend, something that will be talked about twenty years from now. Lesnars stake has sky rocketed in the professional wrestling industry, and just like Taker did ten years ago, he put Lesnar over big time, and there will never be any other accomplishment in the WWE that will come close to Lesnars victory over Taker at WrestleMania.

While there are some people who think superstars such as Wyatt or Reigns should have ended the streak, let us not forget Itll take at least a year or two for them to reach that level, and Undertaker might not be around for that long as a performer. You need to achieve a certain level of success to carry the burden of beating The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and none of the youngsters would be ready by next year or the year after that.

#4 Legitimacy

Brock Lesnar is the only athlete in the history to have won the WWE title and the UFC World Heavyweight championship, not to mention the NCAA Division 1 championship and the IWGP Heavyweight title. His amateur background, and the fact that he is the youngest WWE champion in the history of the WWE only proves that in spite of what the people think, Lesnar is legitimately the best person you could choose to end the streak. My only grievance with the WWE fans is that if they can accept a part timer like Dwayne Johnson as the WWE champion, then I don’t see how they can term Lesnar not worthy because he doesn’t “perform often”. I understand and share the opinion that The Undertaker’s streak has been one of the most important attractions of WrestleMania, but any argument regarding Lesnar’s credentials to beat the dead man is very much debatable.

#3 Undertakers decision

I read someone saying, “If ‘Taker thought it was right, that doesn’t mean he should do it.” Let us get one thing straight – The Undertaker can and should do anything he wants. After giving his everything for the fans and the industry, The Undertaker is in a league of his own. I believe he has achieved more than anyone else – More than the Austins or Hogans or The Rocks, who at one point or the other walked away from the industry and the fans, turning their back on them. I’m not complaining, nor am I insulting them in any way, but my emphasis is on the point that The Undertaker has achieved a mythical status in professional wrestling. If ‘Taker and Vince think that Lesnar should be the one to end the streak, then none of us have the right to question their judgment, as professionals or bookers.

The Undertaker always had a special relationship with Lesnar. Back when Austin left the WWE, refusing to put over Lesnar and Triple H avoided getting into a program with Lesnar, with the fear that it would hurt his status in the company, The Undertaker stepped up and solidified Brock Lesnar as the face of the WWE. The Undertaker, for whatever reason believed that Lesnar was the right choice, and as fans of arguably the greatest name in the history of the industry, we should respect his decision.

#2 Epilogue to the Taker Lesnar saga

Ten years ago, The Undertaker made Brock Lesnar. When Lesnar became the WWE champion by beating The Rock, he needed something that would make him “The man” in the world of professional wrestling. Like a great man once said, “To be the man, you have to beat the man”, and that’s when The Undertaker stepped up and elevated Brock Lesnar’s stake in the company. There is nothing that can be compared to the legendary phenom putting you over, not once but twice.

I had previously mentioned that Hogan needed an Andre, Bret needed a Shawn and Austin needed a Rock. When you turn back the pages of history and revisit some of the greatest moments in the history of the WWE, one of them would be the conqueror of conquerors, the legendary figure of The Undertaker not being able to beat his arch nemesis – Brock Lesnar. Not only would it create for a story of epic proportions, but it also plays out as the final chapter in the Undertaker – Brock Lesnar saga.

#1 Paul Heyman

The number one reason of course, is Paul Heyman. If The Undertaker had to go out, there is no better way to do that than to be beaten by a Paul Heyman guy. I had mentioned the history between Heyman and The Undertaker in my previous article, and there is a reason why Lesnar defeated the dead man this year at WrestleMania. When all the stars align, a miracle happens. We might not understand it as soon as it happens, but when you think about it, at least like a wrestling promoter, this was surely one of the greatest opportunities for the streak to end, and if it so happens to be The Undertaker’s final match, then it is a fitting tribute to the greatest name in the history of professional wrestling, who always put the business ahead of himself.
