Chennai, April 24 (IANS): The Asian Squash Federation on Thursday named India’s champion squash player Saurav Ghosal as the winner of the Dato Alex Lee Award for being the ‘Outstanding Asian Men’s Player of the Year 2013′.
Ghosal was ranked No. 1 in the Indian men’s team at the World championships in 2013 and steered the team to the seventh position. He was a quarterfinalist at the World Open, and highest ranked Asian male at No. 15.
The Indian men’s team comprising Ghosal, Harinderpal Sandhu, Ramit Tandon, Mahesh Mangaonkar along with coaches Cyrus Poncha and Gautam Das, were also chosen for the ‘Outstanding Men’s Team of the Year 2013′ award.
The Indian squash team
The Indian team attained its best ever position of seventh (the best by an Asian country) at the World Championships held in France.
The presentation ceremony of the awards will be conducted June 15, the penultimate day of the Asian Team Championships in Hong Kong.
Poncha said: “As the national coach, I am very happy and pleased that our players have been recognised by the Asian Squash Federation for their efforts. This is truly another feather in our cap, as our players have been working very hard to achieve good results for the country.”
