Asian Team Squash Championships: India continue their good run; finish top of Pool A

The Indian men’s team won both their matches today at the Asian Team Championships in Hong Kong to secure top position in Pool A.

India defeated Qatar 3-0 thanks to fine showing by Harinderpal Singh Sandhu, Sourav Ghosal and Mahesh Mangaonkar. Harinderpal looked at ease as he won in straight games. Saurav looked in trouble after losing the first game 9-11 . Saurav’s speed and consistency was the deciding factor. He won the 4th game in a tie-breaker. Mahesh had a comfortable victory in 3 games making it 3-0 for India. Here are the scores:

Saurav Ghosal Beat Abdulla Mohammed Al-Tamimi 9-11,11-6,11-7,12-10 (3-1)

Mahesh Mangaonkar Beat Abdulrahman Salem Al-Malki 11-6,11-6,11-4 (3-0)

In the evening, India beat the Philippines 3-0. Saurav rested for the tie, giving Ravi Dixit his maiden cap at a senior team championship.

Ravi Dixit beat Lydio Espinola 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 (3-0).

Mahesh Mangaonkar beat Abdulrahman Salem Al-Malki 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 (3-0).

Harinderpal Singh Sandhu beat David William Pelino 11-2, 11-6, 7-11, 11-(3-1).

India will play Korea in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

The Indian women played against hosts Hong Kong, who came out all charged up backed by a vociferous crowd.

Anaka Alankamony was leading 2-0 but was unable to convert her lead going down in 5 games.

Dipika Pallikal also squandered her advantage going down in 5 games as Joey upped the ante in the final 2 games.

Joshana won the last match 3-1.

Indian women will play their remaining 2 pool matches against China & Pakistan which are scheduled tomorrow.
