World Junior Team Championship, Namibia: India end their campaign in sixth position

India finished a disappointing sixth in the World Junior Squash Championships

India finished 6th at the World Junior Team Championships 2014. The team comprised Kush Kumar (bronze medalist in the Individual event), Madhav Dhingra, Vijay Kumar & Velavan Senthilkumar. Seeded 4th in the event, the team won all their pool matches against Guatemala, Kuwait and Columbia convincingly.

In the quarterfinals, India was shocked by a very determined and balanced Spanish team. All 3 players of equal standard, stood up to the task to defeat India 2-1 and by virtue, making the semi finals for the first time ever. Spain eventually won the bronze medal defeating Malaysia in the play off.

In the play off stage, India defeated Ireland 2-0 and were up against England for the 5th position. England seeded 3rd were shocked by Malaysia in the quarterfinal.

England edged out India to obtain 5th position. The tie started with a re- match of the individual quarter final Kush Kumar v/s George Parker. Parker held his nerves and edged out Kush in 5 sets. Madhav Dhingra then went on to defeat higher ranked Lyell Fuller 3-1 to level the scores. Youngster, Velavan was given the opportunity to play Patrick Rooney in the last match of the tie. Velavan who had lost to Rooney in the individual event 1-3 displayed outstanding movement and temperament winning 1st and 3rd games giving India the lead. However, experienced Rooney won the 4th game and clawed his way back from 5-8 in the decider to give England the win.
