Sydney, Jan 22 (IANS) Former Australian Olympic swimmer Scott Miller has been given a one-year suspended jail sentence for drug possession.
Miller, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of drug possession in separate incidents in 2013, reports Xinhua.
The 1996 silver and bronze Olympic medallist was arrested in June 2013 after police found three bags of ‘ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) and thousands of dollars in cash.
A month later, he was again found with 7.75 grams of ‘ice’ at Sydney’s Potts Point.
In the sentencing Wednesday, magistrate Jan Stevenson took into account Miller’s two-year-old son and the fact that he just finished five months of rehabilitation, local media reports said.
The magistrate told Miller that police would be watching him like a hawk as she handed down the sentence to him at the Downing Center Local Court.
Outside the court, Miller’s lawyer Greg Goold told reporters that his client had been working hard to overcome his drug addiction.
Goold said the Olympian was very lucky to avoid jail and would continue with his rehabilitation.
