Championing ‘The Australian Way' of swim teaching and water safety in India

AUSTSWIM will conduct workshops in 3 cities

AUSTSWIM has partnered with Winning Matters Consulting Private Limited to improve the quality of swim teaching in India. AUSTSWIM – the Australasian Council for Swimming and Water Safety is a not for profit, national organisation whose sole purpose is education for safer aquatic participation.

Swimming, along with water safety skills, is a basic life skill that every person in India, especially children, should be taught correctly. As access to swimming pools is growing, the need for accredited swim teachers to deliver swimming and water safety skills is becoming increasingly important.

Winning Matters research on Indian swimming to understand the participation patterns highlighted that in the absence of any structures for the accreditation of swimming teachers in India, swim teaching is currently unstructured and unsafe leading to compromised outcomes for all the relevant stakeholders.

“Australia is recognized for having the best systems for teaching swimming and water safety along with being one of the most successful nations in swimming at the Olympic Games” said Winning Matters founder and Olympian swimmer Hakimuddin Habibulla (Hakim). Hence India can benefit by the systems and standards of swimming and water safety teacher accreditation that have been established by AUSTSWIM.”

A series of 2-day workshops for swim teachers and coaches titled ‘Correct Teaching for Success – Swimming the Australian Way’ and led by Leigh Nugent from Australia will be held in Delhi (SAI National Swimming Academy, 20th & 21st November), Mumbai (American School of Bombay, 23rd & 24th November) and Bangalore (Karnataka State Hockey Association, 27th & 28th November).

Leigh Nugent is the Technical Coaching Director for Swimming Australia. He was the Head Coach for the 2004 & 2012 Australian Olympic Swimming team and considered as one of the most successful Australian head coaches of all time for all Olympic Team sports based on gold medal winning performances (25 Olympic medals won in 2004 & 2012).

Jennifer Schembri-Portelli, AUSTSWIM Chief Executive Officer said, “ It is great to see the recognition and support AUSTSWIM is receiving in India. We would like to thank SAI National Swimming Academy and Sports Authority of India in Delhi, the American School of Bombay in Mumbai and the Karnataka State Hockey Association in Bangalore for providing the venues to host the workshops. We hope the swim teachers across India take this opportunity to learn from Leigh Nugent”
