DC History

Delhi Capitals, which was formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, is a cricket franchise based in India’s capital city Delhi. The franchise is jointly owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group and regularly participates in India’s annual franchise tournament - Indian Premier League (IPL). The team plays its home matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the IPL. The franchise rebranded itself from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals in 2019. Capitals are yet to win a IPL title in 15 seasons of the IPL and have made only one appearance in the final in 2020.

Let’s have a brief look at Delhi Capitals’ performance season wise since 2008.

2008

Delhi-Capitals-10.jpg (977×629)

Virender Sehwag was named the first captain of Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and they finished fourth on the points table with seven wins and six defeats. Delhi lost to eventual title holders Rajasthan Royals in the semi-final by 105 runs. Gautam Gambhir was the top-scorer for Delhi in the inaugural season with 534 runs and Yo Mahesh was the highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets.

2009

Delhi-Capitals-2-1.jpg (1024×841)

Delhi Daredevils qualified for the semi-final for the second straight season only to lose to Adam Gilchrist’s Deccan Chargers by six wickets in the knockout stage. AB de Villiers scored 465 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 130.99 to become the highest run-getter for the Delhi franchise, while pace bowler Ashish Nehra finished the team’s most wicket-getter with 19 scalps in 13 games at 18.21.

2010

Delhi-Capitals-5-1-e1622282436877.jpg (642×449)

Delhi Daredevils saw a change in captaincy as Gautam Gambhir took over the responsibility from Sehwag in the third season of the IPL. Delhi missed out on a semi-final berth as they won seven games and lost seven to finish in fifth place on the points table. They lost to Deccan Chargers in their final league game, which was a virtual eliminator as both teams were tied on 14 points. Delhi lost its place to RCB and CSK because of an inferior net run rate even when all three teams finished at 14 points in the league stage.

2011

Irfan-Pathan-Delhi-Daredevils.jpg (630×420)

Sehwag was reappointed as the skipper of the Delhi outfit as he was the only player retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction of 2011. Apart from the skipper of the previous season, Gautam Gambhir, the franchise also parted ways with AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dirk Nanes and Dinesh Karthik.

Delhi purchased a total of 16 players from the IPL auction of 2011 with the likes of James Hopes, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Naman Ojha, Andrew McDonald and Morne Morkel were among the prominent picks. However, the Daredevils finished at the bottom of the points table in the 10-team tournament with four wins and nine defeats in IPL 2011.

2012

142583.2.jpg (310×412)

Delhi topped the league stage in IPL 2012 with 11 wins out of 16 matches to qualify for the playoffs. But successive losses against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 respectively ended their title hopes. Sehwag scored 495 runs as the team’s highest run-getter and Morne Morkel picked 25 wickets to win the Purple cap of the season.

2013

Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene was appointed the full time captain of Delhi after he led them in the 2012 Champions League Trophy. The move came after Sehwag wanted to focus on his batting. However, Delhi finished at the ninth place with just three wins in 16 matches. David Warner top-scored for the franchise with 410 runs and Umesh Yadav picked the most wickets (16) in the season.

2014

Delhi-Daredevils.jpg (640×469)

The 2014 IPL season was back to the 8-team format with each team playing 14 league games. England’s Kevin Pietersen was appointed the captain of the team after the reshuffling of the squad. Delhi was the only franchise who did not retain a single player ahead of the 2014 mega auction. The team once again finished on the bottom of the points table with just two wins against KKR and MI.

2015

South Africa all-rounder JP Duminy was named the new captain of the franchise for the 2015 IPL season. After finishing last in the league stage for two consecutive seasons, Delhi ended up on seventh place in IPL 2015 with five wins in 14 matches. The skipper led from the front with 414 runs in the middle order and Imran Tahir picked the most wickets (15) for the team.

2016

dd-1464338534-800.jpg (594×297)

Zaheer Khan was appointed the skipper of Delhi Daredevils and their chances of making it to the playoffs were alive till the last game of the league stage fixtures. Delhi lost to Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last game, which was a virtual eliminator as the winner would secure a place in the top four. Delhi won seven games and lost as many matches to finish sixth on the league stage.

2017

delhi-daredevils-celebrate-a-wicket-bcci_806x605_81494614234.jpg (806×605)

Delhi won six games and lost eight in the 2017 IPL season. Karun Nair captained the team in three matches in the absence of Zaheer Khan. Sanju Samson scored 386 runs at a strike rate of 141.39 and Pat Cummins claimed 15 wickets at an average of 24.86. Both the players were Delhi’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker in the IPL 2017 as the team ended sixth on the points table.

2018

delhi-daredevils-is-now-delhi-capitals-2018-12-04.jpg (1000×800)

Gautam Gambhir returned to the franchise after seven seasons and took back the captaincy reins. However, Gambhir stepped down from the role midway owing to poor performance both individually and the team's position as well.

Shreyas Iyer took over the responsibility for the remaining season as Delhi finished last on the table with five victories in 14 games. With 684 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 173.60, Rishabh Pant was the most run-scorer of the team in IPL 2017. New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult was the leading wicket-taker (18 wickets at 25.88) for Delhi in that season.

2019

morris-delhi-capitals-pti.jpg (760×443)

Shreyas Iyer assumed the full-time captaincy role of the franchise after it changed its name to Delhi Capitals. After a span of seven years, Delhi entered the playoffs in IPL 2019. They won nine games in 14 matches, the same tally of the top two teams on the table - Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The Capitals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator match but lost to CSK in the Qualifier 2 to end their campaign. Shikhar Dhawan (521) and Kagiso Rabada (25) finished as the team’s highest run-getter and wicket-taker in that season.

2020

dc-vs-csk1-1604131899.jpg (715×402)

Capitals progressed under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy as they reached their maiden IPL final of any season. DC recorded eight wins and six losses to finish second on the points table. Capitals couldn’t get the better of Mumbai Indians in all four clashes, including Qualifier 1 and final. Dhawan (618) and Rabada (30) were once again the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker of the team in the second straight season.

2021

1620037805_sd-reaction-2021.jpg (510×340)

Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of IPL 2021 owing to a shoulder injury and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was given the responsibility to lead the side. Pant continued as the captain even when Iyer returned back to the team in the second phase of IPL 2021 in UAE.

The change in captaincy didn’t bother the results as Capitals led the charts with 10 wins from 14 games. They suffered back-to-back defeats by CSK (Qualifier 1) and KKR (Qualifier 2) in the playoffs. For the third time in a row, Shikhar Dhawan (587 runs in 16 innings) was the highest run-getter of Delhi in IPL, while Avesh Khan finished with 24 wickets as the team’s leading wicket-taker in the season.

2022

avesh-khan-dc-ipl-2021.jpg (1200×667)

Rishabh Pant was retained as the captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022 with the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada and Shimron Hetmyer released from the team. David Warner returned back to Delhi Capitals after nine years.

With seven wins and as many defeats in the season, Capitals missed their qualification mark when they lost to Mumbai Indians in their last game of the league stage. With 432 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 150.52, Warner was the leading run-scorer of the team. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the highest wicket-taker of DC with 21 scalps in 14 matches at 19.95.

Delhi Capitals IPL 2023: Players to watch out for

7a31gpfg_david-warner-bcci_625x300_20_April_22.jpg (806×605)

A well-oiled run-machine, who loves the added responsibility of leadership, David Warner will once prove to be the key for the Delhi Capitals at the top of the order.

Warner was the leading run-scorer for DC last season. In 12 innings, the Aussie southpaw hammered 432 runs @ 48.00/150.52 with the help of five 50+ scores.

1364614-p.jpg (1280×720)

The blistering opener will again look to provide his side with great starts in the powerplay in the upcoming season of the IPL. No one has scored at a faster clip in the powerplay than Prithvi in the recent seasons, and the pocket sized dynamo will look to emulate the same this year.

78474981.jpg (400×300)

Nortje did not have the best of IPL 2022 as he was still recovering from an injury at the time, but the Proteas bolter has regained his form since then.

He was excellent for the Pretoria Capitals in the recent SA20, finishing as their leading wicket-taker- 20 wickets in 11 innings @ 13.25/6.18. Nortje will look to emulate the same in IPL 2023.

FAQs
