“Leander invokes fear amongst opponents,” that’s how India’s Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj described the team’s only change ahead of their World Group playoff vs top ranked Czech Republic. The inclusion of India’s senior most player and 17 time grand slam winner is certain to bolster the team’s chances in the doubles and Amritraj conceded the same.
He said, “You see, he is an absolute legend and according to me he is playing his best tennis currently. Also his presence can be very uplifting for the youngsters. The likes of Yuki and Somdev will be inspired even more to do well I am sure.”
Having played 50 ties over 23 years for India in the prestigious tournament, Paes has orchestrated many a famous win for India and was an automatic choice for the tie. The management did however lament the exclusion of Saketh Myneni. “He is a team player and to leave him out of the roster is extremely disheartening. But you have to take such decisions and thankfully Saketh took it well,” said the gaffer.
Paes meanwhile hasn’t managed to reach the capital yet following his win at the Flushing Meadows and is expected to join the team here tomorrow. Adding about his involvement, senior player Rohan Bopanna said, “It’s great to have him join us for the tie. He has played with Stepanek a lot and that should add to our preparations.”
Apart from him, India look pretty settled and while a win seems unlikely, the team should surely give the champions from 2012 and 2013 a run for their money. Both the singles players – Yuki Bhambri and Somdev Devvarman – have been prolific at the venue, and that adds to the growing optimism here.
Talking about the tie, local boy Bhambri said, “We are pretty comfortable playing here. I was practically raised here and Somdev has won the Delhi Open thrice. So he relishes the bouncy nature of the court too. Also, the way we beat New Zealand after being 1-2 down was exemplary.”
That performance in Christchurch in July certainly was exemplary. But it would amount to nothing if Coach Amritraj’s troops fall short like they did against Serbia last September. The Indian fans have been treated to many great Davis Cup performances by Leander Paes, and the country will be hoping for an encore against the Czech Republic as the home team look to make it to the World Group again.
