ITF Mandya Open: Rawat, Bisht send seeds packing

Top seed Antoine Escoffier of France executes a delicate backhand to take his appointed place in the last eight.

MANDYA (Karnataka), May 20: Indian Sidarth Rawat created the biggest upset of the Mysore Minerals Ltd Men’s ITF $10,000 Mandya Open Singles when he defeated No 2 seed Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan in straight sets at 6-4, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals here on Wednesday.

That the second seed from Tamil Nadu was taped up on his knee cannot take away the grit and determination that the Delhi player exhibited on center court at the PET Sports Complex.

Fifth seed Mohit Mayur beame the second casualty of the singles event when he was hounded out 1-6, 1-6 by Ronit Singh Bisht. Bisht was in his elements and made the bulky Mayur look ordinary with some precise and pleasing tennis.

Joining Rawat and Bisht in the quarter-finals were fourth seed Sasi Kumar Mukund, 6th seed JuiChen Hung of Chinese Taipe, 8th seed Vishnu Vardhan, third seed Karunuday Singh, seventh seed Vinayak Sharma Kaza and No 1 seed France’s Antoine Escoffier.

Ironically Murugesan and Mayur, having received top billing in the doubles event pulled out allowing for the Indo-Chn Tpe pair of Sasi Kumar Mukund and Jui Chen Hung walk into the semis.

The fourth seeded Japanese pair of Shotoro Goto and Kazuma KAwachi also bit the dust bowing out to the Indian duo of Haadin Bava and Tejas Chaukulkar 6-2, 6-3.

The other two pairs to complete the last four line-up were the Sood Brothers Chandril and Lakshit 6-2, 6-1 winners over Sahil Gaware and Kunal Vazirani and Anvit Bendre pairing up with Akash Wagh to defeat Maninder Singh and Siddarth Vishwakarma.
