Shocking news greeted fans from across the globe, early Monday morning when Maria Sharapova announced that she had failed a drug test during the 2016 Australian Open in January.

Several reactions poured in from several quarters, including former champions like Jennifer Capriati, lashing out at the Russian. Several leading brands, a few of whom had been associated with the 5-time Grand Slam champion for more than a decade, also suspended ties with her.

Three days after the revelation, Sharapova posted an emotional message on her Facebook page, thanking everybody for the support during a tough phase of just her career, but also life and praised the fans for their loyalty and support.

The 2004 Wimbledon champion also hoped to get back to the tennis court and start playing again.

“I wanted to let you know that your wonderful words put a smile on my face. I'd like to play again and hope to have the chance to do so. Your messages give me great encouragement. This message isn't anything else but to say thank you. Thank you very much,” she said.

“In this moment, I am so proud to call you my fans. Within hours of my announcement, you showed me support and loyalty, which I could only expect to hear when someone would be at the top of their profession,” she added.
