Shanghai, Oct 13 (IANS) The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) announced on Thursday that Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been fined $16,500 for his intentional defeat a day earlier at the Shanghai Masters.

ATP said in a statement that the Australian player, World No.14, has been fined $10,000 for "lack of best efforts" plus $5,000 for verbal abuse of a spectator and an additional $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Kyrgios was beaten by German Mischa Zverev on Wednesday in the second round of the tournament, reports Efe.

The Australian lost the game on purpose, as he neither exerted any efforts nor ran during the match.

During the post-game press conference, Kyrgios did not apologise and responded improperly.
