Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis to end 2015 as World No 1

Mirza-Hingis have been unstoppable this year

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis are set to end this year as the World No. 1 ranked women doubles pair, after they reached the finals of the WTA Championships in Singapore. WTA announced on their official website that the Indo-Swiss duo has secured the 2015 WTA Year-End World No.1 Doubles ranking.

The pair have won eight titles this year, including two Grand Slams – Wimbledon and the US Open.

Mirza-Hingis paired up for the first time at the 2015 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in March. The duo entered the competition as top seeds and went on to win the title. Their next competition was the Miami Open, which they won without dropping a single set throughout.

Their next competition, the Family Circle Cup, added another trophy to their kitty, and Mirza went on to become the world No. 1 ranked doubles player in WTA rankings.

The next few tournaments were disappointing, as the duo even crashed out of the French Open, despite being the No. 1 seeded pair.

After the grass court season started, Mirza-Hingis achieved their biggest feat when they won The Wimbledon in July. Their career together reached new heights when they triumphed at the US Open in September, adding another grand slam to their glittery careers.

This year, the Indo-Swiss duo won the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, China Open and Guangzhou International Women’s Open as well.

Hingis had her say on the achievement, telling the WTA, "It is definitely something beyond my expectations, when I first teamed up with Sania it was a trial at Indian Wells and Miami to see how it would go. We ended up winning both of those tournaments and Charleston on top of it, and since then it has been an incredible journey.”

“Ending up as the No. 1 team is definitely something beyond my expectations and something I had dreamed of but when it really happened it was incredible", she added.

As of now, the pair is waiting to play the final of WTA Finals in Singapore, where they have reached after defeating the Chinese Taipei pair of Hao-Chin Chang and Yung-Jan Chang 6-4 6-2 in the semifinal on Saturday.

This victory was the Indo-Swiss pair’s 20th consecutive win across all competitions.

They will play the winner of the match between Garbine Muguruza/Carla Suarez-Navarro and Andrea Hlavackova/Lucie Hradecka.
