Star Sports network to broadcast the Wimbledon Championships

Star Sports will bring Wimbledon to millions of homes this year

Talking about Wimbledon, a tournament which he won seven times and deservedly so, multi Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras once said, "They act like they've got the biggest tournament in the world, and they're right, they do."

The biggest and the most prestigious of the Grand Slams, the Wimbledon Championships start June 29 and will be broadcast LIVE on Star Sports 2, Star Sports HD2, Star Sports 4 and Star Sports HD4.

The serene settings, white clothing and the fiercely competitive action from the grass courts will be brought to the TV screens in India by two of the finest Tennis experts, Vijay Amritraj and Alan Wilkins. The two familiar faces in tennis broadcast will front the TV coverage across the Star Sports network and will present the Championships LIVE from the Star Sports studio in Mumbai.

Leading up to the tournament, Star Sports will broadcast Wimbledon films and Golden Moments from the previous 138 editions until the inaugural day on June 29, 2015.

First played in 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest tournament in tennis. Evoking tradition, the contest is still fought out on grass while strict rules require players to play in crisp whites. With the famous Strawberry & Cream served off the court, the on-court action will witness the best tennis players descending on the All England Club to pose their challenge for the ultimate prize in tennis.

Before famously winning the Wimbledon Championship in 2001, Ivanisevic was once quoted saying, "If some angel comes tonight in my dreams and says, 'Okay, Goran, you're going to win Wimbledon tomorrow, but you won't be able to touch the racket ever again in your life', I would take that."

Fresh from winning the French Open, Stan Wawrinka will be bidding to add his name to the roll call of legends that have triumphed at Wimbledon over the 137-year history of the tournament, even as the established greats like world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, seven time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and home-hero Andy Murray seek to burnish their own.

In the ladies’ battle, five-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will be looking to carry her French Open-winning form onto the sacred turf of the coveted Centre Court and fend off competition from the likes of Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Lucie Safarova.

Representing the Indian contingent at the tournament will be Sania Mirza, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna. Mirza will team up with Martina Hingis, currently the sport’s top ladies’ pairing, while Paes will look forward to add another jewel to his crown after winning his 700th career doubles match at the French Open.
