US Open 2014: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer named as top two seeds

The final Grand Slam of the year kicks off in New York on the 25th of August and the seeds for the tournament were announced on Tuesday. There are no major surprises as Novak Djokovic leads the fray followed by Roger Federer.

Federer is seeded 2 due to Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from the tournament with an injury. The 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer is seeded at the US Open for the 14th consecutive year, tied with Ivan Lendl for the longest streak, trailing only Jimmy Connors’ record of 18. The Swiss maestro won the US Open from 2004-08 before falling to Juan Martin Del Potro in a classic 2009 final.

Djokovic, who won the US Open men’s singles title in 2011, has appeared in the last four US Open singles finals. The 2014 Wimbledon champion has posted a 39-6 record so far in 2014 and will now look to become the first player since Federer (2004-09) to reach five consecutive US Open finals.

Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is seeded third, while Spaniard David Ferrer makes it to number 4. 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray hasn’t had a great year thus far and is seeded 8th. Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga find places in the top owing to good showing in major tournaments.

The singles draw for the tournament will be revealed on August 21.
