About Madrid Open 2024

Madrid Open 2024 Introduction

Madrid Open, also known as Mutua Madrid Open due to sponsorship reasons, is one of the prestigious events played annually in Madrid, Spain. Played on clay courts, it is an ATP 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament that will commence from April 22, 2024, to May 5, 2024.

Ion Tiriac, a famous billionaire and former ATP professional, owned the tournament from 2009 to 2021. According to Digi Sport reports, he sold it to New York-based IMG for €390 million. Feliciano Lopez is the director of the Mutua Madrid Open.

The 15th edition of the women's tournament has 96 players in the singles category and 32 teams in the doubles category. The winner of the tournament in the singles and doubles categories will receive 1000 points. Starting in 2021, it became a two-week tournament.

The ATP and WTA players will receive equal prize money in the tournament, which reached an all-time high of €7,877,020, compared to €7,705,780 last year. Former World No. 1 Simona Halep and Carolina Wozniacki received wild card entries in the women's singles draw of the Madrid Open 2024. Other popular players include Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina, and home favorite Paula Badosa.

Madrid Open History

Starting in 2002, the Madrid Open was classified as the ATP Masters tournament, which replaced the Eurocard Open played in Stuttgart. However, in 2009, it was reintroduced with a new surface and location and the inclusion of the WTA tournament in the circuit. Earlier, the tournament was played on a hard indoor court, but it was later shifted to a clay court outdoors in 2009.

In 2012, previous owner Tiriac implemented the idea of playing the tournament on blue clay for all surfaces in the WTA and ATP categories. The director of the tournament, Manuel Santana, ensured that the blue surface had all the properties of traditional red clay. However, after the 2012 event, threats from players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic led the organizers to return to traditional red clay.

Aryna Sabalenka is the 2023 Madrid Open champion in the singles category who is going to defend her title. Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia are the winners in the doubles category. Petra Kvitova holds the record of winning the tournament the most number of times in the singles category. Simona Halep has reached the final of the tournament four times.
