The Open 2023 History

The Open Championship, also known as The Open or the British Open, is the world's oldest and most prestigious golf tournament. Established in 1860, it was initially held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland and later rotated among select coastal links golf courses in the U.K. The R&A organizes the tournament.

As one of the four major men's golf tournaments, alongside the Master's Tournament, the PGA Championship, and the U.S. Open, The Open has traditionally been the year's final major since the PGA Championship's schedule change in 2019. It takes place in mid-July.

The name "The Open" signifies its inclusive nature, theoretically open to both professional and amateur golfers. However, in practice, the event primarily consists of professional players, with a few top amateurs participating through invitation or qualification. The tournament's success has inspired the introduction of numerous open golf tournaments worldwide.

The reigning champion is Cameron Smith, who triumphed in the 2022 Open at St Andrews with a score of 268.

The Open 2023 Schedule

The 151st grand edition of The Open Championship will be held from Thursday, 20th July, onwards and go on till Sunday, 23rd July.

The Open will take place at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Merseyside. Play will start at 7 am on the opening two days and at 9 am over the weekend.

The Open 2023 Course

The 151st Open will be played at Royal Liverpool from 16-23 July 2023. The links at Hoylake, located at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, offer a stunning and inspiring setting for golf. The course presents a range of challenges, especially when the wind is strong, and the rough is thick during the summer. It was specifically designed to be a rigorous test of golfing skills and holds significant historical importance in the development of the sport in Great Britain.

Royal Liverpool is one of the oldest seaside clubs in England, second only to Westward Ho! in Devon, which was established a few years earlier. Despite its initially flat, seemingly gentle appearance, Hoylake poses challenging requirements in terms of shot selection, precise distance control, and accuracy for players.

The Open 2023 Course Field List

A lineup of top players from the PGA Tour, the D.P. World Tour, LIV Golf, and previous Open champions will head to compete on the famous links. A diverse field of competitors, who have qualified through various paths during the season, will gather on Merseyside this 20th July to compete for the Claret Jug. While Cameron Smith will be looking to defend the Claret Jug, he won from the hands of Rory McIlroy at St Andrews in 2022.
