Stats: Australia vs India, 5th ODI - Record-breaking series ends with world record chase

India held onto their No.2 ODI ranking as they won the fifth ODI at the SCG, but still lost the series 4-1.

Centuries from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh propelled Australia to 330/7 in their 50 overs on a wicket that was offering some assistance to the pacers. On debut, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he finished his quota of 10 overs with figures of 2/40.

In response, a century opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma set the perfect platform for the visitors. But the loss of Dhawan and Virat Kohli in quick succession put the visitors in a spot of bother.

But, fifties from Manish Pandey and Rohit, who was eventually dismissed for 99, set the stage for MS Dhoni. Although the captain did well, it was Pandey, who scored his maiden ODI hundred and performed his finisher role to perfection to ensure there was no whitewash.

Here are some of the interesting numbers from the fifth ODI:

1 – No. of bilateral ODI series that had more totals of 300 or more than this series, which has had 7 including Aus's 1st inns - Ind v Aus, 2013-14 (9 such totals).

1 – Only once have India conceded fewer than 7 runs in the last 2 overs of an ODI in the first innings since 2002. Against Zimbabwe, they conceded just four runs at Harare in 2005.

1 – This was the first time in the series that either side had lost their third wicket for less than 150 runs.

2 – This was David Warner’s second century at the SCG. Only Sanath Jayasuriya (3) has more centuries at the SCG.

2 – This was only India’s second win against Australia at the SCG in 15 attempts. Their only previous victory was the 1st final of the CB series in 2007/08.

3 – Rohit Sharma is the only 3rd batsman after Geoffrey Boycott and Andy Flower to score a 99 against Australia in ODIs.

3 – Manish Pandey now holds the record for the fewest innings taken for maiden ODI 100. Pandey got to his hundred in just 3 innings, beating Kedar Jadhav’s record of 4. Manoj Prabhakar and MS Dhoni both took 5 innings.

4 – This was the fourth time Australia have lost an ODI after two of their batsmen have made hundreds. Of those four occasions, three were against India.

10 – After 10 successive innings without a 50 partnership, Dhawan and Rohit have now recorded it in two successive matches. 65 in the last match and 123 in this match.

11 – Manish Pandey scored the 11th hundred in this series, which gives it the record for most 100s in a bilateral ODI series. The three hundreds today helped it overtake the India-Australia series from 2013, which had 9 hundreds.

19 – After 19 unbeaten ODI matches at home, Australia finally lose an ODI. The last ODI they lost was against South Africa in November 2014 at Perth.

20 – Mitchell Marsh's century made it the 20th international century for the Marsh family. Father Geoff Marsh scored 13 (4 Tests and 9 ODIs), while Shaun Marsh has 6 ( 3 each in Tests and ODIs) and Mitchell Marsh has one in ODIs.

21 – Virat Kohli crossed 1,000 ODI runs against Australia. He got there in 21 innings and was the fourth-fastest to the milestone. The fastest is Rohit Sharma (19), joint-second is Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar (20), while Graham Gooch, Viv Richards, AB de Villiers all got there in 21 innings.

28 – Steven Smith's score of 28 in the fifth ODI was his lowest against India in 7 innings.

33 – This was the first time in 33 occasions that a target of more than 300 has been chased by a team in an ODI in Australia.

37 – Manish Pandey becomes the 37th Indian batsman to make an ODI century. Overall, it is the 239th ODI hundred India have registered.

50 – This was the first time in a bilateral ODI series in Australia that both sides have hit 50 sixes in the series.

99 – Rohit Sharma is the first player to get out on 99 at SCG. He is also the first Indian to get out on 99 against Australia in an ODI.

100 – Three hundreds were scored by batsmen today and the fourth was just one run shy. Had Rohit Sharma completed his century it would have only been the third time in ODI history when four 100s were made in the same ODI match.

331 – India's chase is now the highest in an ODI in Australia against Australia. The previous best was West Indies’ 284.

400+ – Rohit Sharma joined Hashim Amla as the only batsman to have scored 400+ runs in two separate bilateral ODI series. Amla got both of his 400+ scores against West Indies, while both of Rohit’s have come against Australia. He is also the first player to score over 400 runs and still end up on the losing side.

250.75 – Prior to this game, that was the average score at which the 3rd wicket fell in the first 4 ODIs of the series for both. Australia lost their first three wickets for 78 today.

863 – The runs scored by the 2nd wicket partnership in the series is the most in any bilateral ODI series. The previous record was held by the New Zealand-South Africa series in 2000/01 when 756 runs were scored.

3,159 – This is now the most amount of runs ever scored in a five game ODI series. This beats the previous record of 3,151 runs set during the England-New Zealand series last year.
