Ramana Korada, Harshdeep Kaur shine at the National Weightlifting Championships

The National Weightlifting Championships are currently on in Patiala

The National Weightlifting Championships which was held at Patiala this year brought some fresh faces into the limelight. The event, which concluded its fourth day yesterday, saw the strength and stamina of the weightlifters in the country. The competition serves as a great platform for several upcoming budding wrestlers to showcase their talent as the countdown for Rio 2016 beguns.

The competition started on 25th December at SAI, NS NIS, Patiala with a total of 255 competitors- 164 in Men and 91 in Women section. Three weight categories were defined for the competition.

Korada Ramana grabbed the first place while Jamjang Deru and Guru Raja claimed the second and third places respectively in the 56 kg body weight category on the opening day of the event.

Harshdeep Kaur came first in the Women’s 53 kg body weight category of the event, which was held on the 26th. Matsa Santoshi and Deeksha Gaikwad came second and third respectively on the same event. Deepak Lather, Vishal Byakude, Manjunath Marati came first, second and third in the Men’s 62 kg bodyweight category at the inter-state level with totals of 266 kg, 258 kg, 243 kg respectively.

Saswati Rout came first in the Women’s 58 kg body weight category with a total of 189 kg. N. Sumanbala Devi followed her to the second position with a total of 183 kg while Navdeep Kaur grabbed the third position during the third day of the competition.

On the fourth day of the Senior National Weightlifting Competitions, Pradeep Singh from Punjab came first with a total of 330 kg in the Men’s 94 kg body weight category. He had also come first in the inter-state level. RV Rahul followed him to a close second with a total of 329 kg. Noginder Singh from Madhya Pradesh earned the third position with a total of 317 kg.
