Ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat disqualified from the first Olympic Qualifying event

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for being overweight

India’s Ace female Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the first World Olympic Qualifying event for being overweight today. The day has been embarrassing for the Indians as the other female grapplers too failed to make the cut for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Vinesh weighed 400gm more than what was stipulated to be eligible for the 48kg category competition and thus was disappointingly disqualified. Times Now tweeted the news on their official twitter account. Here it is:

"Vinesh was overweight by 400 gms, so she was disqualified from the competition," a top official in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) told PTI, reports Business Standard.

India wasted a chance to ensure an Olympic berth in the 48kg format and are now left with just one more opportunity to book a ticket to the Rio Games at the last Olympic qualifier. The 2nd Olympic Qualification tournament is scheduled to be held at Istanbul, Turkey from 6th May to 8th May.

The official also said, “"Vinesh and the coaches have been hauled up for costing India a chance to qualify for the Rio Games. Since she is a first time offender, she has been given a warning,"

According to the official, the wrestler has assured them that she will give her 200 percent in Istanbul and make sure that she qualifies for the Olympics. He also warned her that if she fails there as well, then she would be issued a show-cause notice after her return to India.
