CWG 2014 - Dominating performance by Indian wrestlers continues with 2 more gold medals

Indian wrestlers’ domination continued as they grabbed two golds, one silver and one bronze on the last day of the wrestling competition in the XX edition of the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow.

With these four medals, Indian grapplers ended their dream run in the games with a total of five golds, six silvers and two bronze medals.

GOLDEN GIRL BABITA

Indian wrestler Babita Kumari put up an astounding show as she totally dominated her Canadian opponent and defeated her 9-2 to clinch the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 55kg category.

Babita, a 2010 CWG silver medalist and 2012 World Championships bronze medalist, started the match on a positive note as she grabbed few quick points in the early part of the first period to take a healthy lead.

The 33-year-old Canadian gave her level best but it was only in the last 15 seconds that she managed to get two points; by then, it was almost over.

England’s Louisa Porogovska and Nigeria’s Ifeoma Nwoye won the bronze medals.

YOGESHWAR GIVES INDIA THE 12th GOLD

2010 CWG gold medalist and London Olympic bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt outclassed Canada's Jevon Balfour to grab the gold medal in the men’s 65kg freestyle category.

Yogeshwar defeated the Canadian grappler 10-0 in just 103 seconds, and was declared winner on the basis of technical superiority.

Nigeria’s Sampson Clarkson and Scottish Alex Gladkov won the bronze medals.

GEETIKA GRABS SILVER

Geetika Jakhar, who performed excpetionally well till the semifinals, was no match for her Canadian counterpart Danielle Lapaage as she lost the gold medal bout by a scoreline of 0-7 in the women’s 63kg category. It was still an impressive showing by Geetika, who managed to turn plenty of heads with her strong run to the final.

Cameroon’s Blandine Metalla and and Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu grabbed the bronze medals.

A BRONZE FOR PAWAN

Pawan Kumar won the bronze medal in men’s 86kg category after defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam by virtue of scoring the last points in the match.

The bout between the Indian and Pakistani wrestler ended with a score of 6-6. And according to the rules, if there is a tie then the wrestler who scored the move of highest points wins.

In this match, both the wrestlers scored their highest move of 2 points and in that case the wrestler who scores the last point wins.

Canada’s Tagizev won the gold medal whereas silver went Nigeria’s way.
