Asian Games: Sanathoi Devi, Narender settle for bronze in wushu

Sanathoi Devi Yumnam and Narender Grewal

India settle for two bronze medals in the wushu event of the Incheon Asian Games. Sanathoi Devi Yumnam settled for a bronze medal in the women’s 52-kg Sanda event after she went down 0-2 to China’s Zhang Luan in the semifinal on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Manipuri fought hard against her formidable Chinese opponent but came a cropper, as the latter proved too good for her. Sanathoi Devi – the twice World Championship silver medallist (2013 World Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and 2011 World Championship in Ankara, Turkey) – can draw solace from the fact that she is the country’s lone women player to bag a wushu medal at the Asiad.

Earlier in the quarterfinal, Sanathoi Devi had got the better of Mongolia’s Sangidorj Amgalanjargal 2-0. She had defeated Mubarak Kamalova of Uzbekistan in the pre-quarterfinal.

Narender Grewal also had to settle for a bronze after he lost to Jean Claude Saclag of Philippines in the semifinals of the men’s 60-kg Sanda event. The 20-year-old Indian, who started his career as a wrestling before taking to wushu, overpowered Pakistan’s Abdullah 2-0 in the quarterfinal bout. Narender had prevailed over Nepal’s Tharu Mangal Prasad in the pre-quarterfinals.

India’s wushu campaign had begun on a disappointing note with 2013 World Championship bronze medallist Wangkhem Sandhyarani Devi bowing out early losing to Thi Ly Tan of Vietnam in the women's 60kg Sanda event. Santosh Kumar – another 2013 World Championship bronze medallist – bite the dust losing to Rizaidin Railin of Kazakhstan in the men's 56kg Sanda pre-quarterfinal.
