5 Biggest takeaways from Goldberg's return

The Goldberg we saw is a completely different man!

It’s hard to find a wrestling fan who is not talking about Goldberg’s return. Positively or negatively, everyone has their say on the situation and as fans; we are entitled to be so.

The return meant different things for everyone. Some fans were emotionally overwhelmed by seeing him in the WWE ring after more than a decade, while a small portion was busy complaining about how bringing a part-timer is bad.

Either way, as I mentioned earlier, everyone had something to say about the return of Goldberg. On the surface, it was a high-profile return to set up a high profile match.

But if we dig deeper into the segment that Goldberg delivered and the timing of his return, there are certain things that deserve to be dissected. And in this list, we are going to take a look at these talking points.

#5 WWE still relies on their past glory

Blast from the past

The return of Goldberg was a happy sight for many. It was good for WWE in terms of ratings but it once again exposes their inability to create new stars. Every time WWE wants to give their ratings a push, they simply bring in one of the former stars. They draw big, make no doubts about it, but WWE has failed to replace these names.

Over the past few years, this trend has continued and it is more than evident. This technique might be fool proof on a short-term basis, but in the long run, this is going to hurt then big time.

#4 The Tsunami of Nostalgia

The Nostalgia machine

If you were on social media platforms on the day Goldberg returned, the tsunami of nostalgia that flooded the place would’ve been visible. People who rarely tuned into the weekly WWE product jumped out of their seats when they heard that Goldberg was returning and this is the star power that WWE wanted to bank on.

The whole situation seemed like time travel for many wrestling fans but the funny thing was, none of them allowed the WrestleMania 20 disaster to get into their head.

Everyone is hyped for the rematch of a showdown that they complained about for years.

Despite the negatives, Goldberg kicked off reactions everywhere. You can check out the best Twitter reactions from the return of Goldberg here: WWE Raw 17th October 2016: Best Twitter Reactions.

#3 Passion in Goldberg

Goldberg seemed more passionate

One of the major criticisms that came at Goldberg throughout his wrestling career was the lack of passion for the business. A good portion of the wrestling fans saw him as the outsider who came into wrestling just to make money and Goldberg admitted this on several occasions as well. However, the returning promo that he gave said a different story.

He oozed passion throughout his segment and it’s safe to say that we saw a different Goldberg altogether. Whether it was a work or a real life thing is a debate for another day, but the Goldberg that we knew in the past and the Goldberg that we saw recently on Raw had many differences.

#2 Pushing the family man gimmick

Goldberg interacted with children throughout his entrance

A major takeaway from the returning promo of Goldberg was the way he emphasised his family. Goldberg stated that his wife and son were going to see him in action for the first time and this did two things.

First of all, it showed us how long it’s been since Goldberg showed up in WWE. Secondly, it showed us that he has changed and how he is a family man now.

He is someone that wants to show his family a glimpse of his glory days. Looking back, we know that anyone who connects with the fans through his family background would be treated as a major babyface. This leads us to the most important takeaway of Goldberg’s return.

#1 Brock has the chance to be WWE’s top heel

Could turn into a full blown heel

In the last slide, we saw how Goldberg is a different man. He would be treated as a clean cut babyface due to his emphasis on family and this opens the door for Brock Lesnar. By going up against Goldberg, Lesnar turned into the top heel of WWE as he would be looking to crush the dreams of a man, who wants to be a hero in front of his son.

In Lesnar’s last few storylines, he has been treated as a legitimate athlete rather than a heel, but it would be a different story on this one. And if Lesnar goes on to defeat Goldberg at Survivor Series, one could imagine how much heat that he and Paul Heyman are going to receive.
