5 booking decisions for the WWE tag team division

Are New Day on the same popularity level as E&C and the Dudleys of the 2000s??

The New Day are highly popular tag team champions, but their antics and promos are getting over the top and repetitive week after week. Xavier Woods is the only New Day member with a natural flair for humour and even though Kofi and Big E have worked hard enough, many of their jokes seem to be missing the point.

Coming to in-ring work, the roles are reversed, though, with Kofi the best of the lot.

The bottom line is that despite the public support, New Day still has a long way to go if they are to be considered as the second coming of Edge and Christian.

Their domination of the tag team division has seen very few credible challengers for their titles – what is the way forward?

5. The Club has its say

Future tag champs?

The New Day has had a legendary run atop the tag team division, but it might be time to start thinking of the opponents to knock them off their pedestal. With their match against the Vaudevillains at Extreme rules turning out to be a glorified squash match, who can dethrone the New Day?

Enter the Club. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson have brought along their popularity in Japan over to the WWE and the fans have gotten behind them as well. They seem to be the only opponents who can stand toe to toe with the New Day at this juncture.

Can the Club be the ones to end the New Day’s title run?? There doesn’t seem to be a better alternative at this point

4. Enzo & Cass to step up?

Can they spoil the party?

The Vaudevillains WWE run has lost a bit of steam, but the team of Enzo and Big Cass are still running high. Save the unfortunate concussion suffered by Enzo, the team would have been in the title picture by now.

It is an exciting prospect to see the New Day trade verbal jabs with Enzo and Cass, but it all depends on how soon Enzo can return to in-ring competition and whether the WWE has plans to elevate Cass to the singles division.

But a New Day vs Enzo & Cass feud is too good to let go.

3. Worth the Buck?

The Young Bucks in the WWE?

WWE has signed a lot of hot Indie stars in the recent past. Why not sign the greatest tag team in the world right now?? I am talking about Matt and Nick, The Young Bucks.

The current PWG and NEVER Tag team champions, the Young Bucks were named as the Pro Wrestling Illustrated tag team of the year in both 2014 and 2015. TNA fans would remember the early avatar of the Young Bucks as the high-flying Generation Me (GenMe) in the promotion.

Oh, by the way, they are former members of the Bullet Club as well who kayfabe kicked AJ Styles out of the group.

And have you seen their finishing move – the Meltzer Driver???? It’s worth it!!!

4. A tag team battle royal

All out in the open?

With a number of tag teams in the mix, it would be a good idea to have a tag team battle royal with the tag titles on the line or to crown a new No.1 contender. This would throw open a number of new angles and it would also be a great way to introduce some tag teams from NXT into the main roster as well.

The New Day’s’ schtick is rapidly wearing out and they need quality opposition to keep them relevant, relying on juvenile jokes and cake smashing won’t help.

The battle royal could also have some former WWE tag teams returning for one night only to provide some nostalgia. All this would help remind the WWE fans that the tag team division is still relevant.

5. New alliances

Unlikely alliances?

With the current crop of tag teams in the company not providing enough fight for the New Day, the solution might be to form new tag teams. There are a number of popular WWE Superstars who are underutilized in their singles run as of late.

What if Dolph Ziggler turned heel and formed a tag team with Alberto Del Rio to challenge for the gold? They would provide a formidable challenge to the New Day and could win the titles as well.

What if Baron Corbin and Kevin Owens decide to work together??

All these possibilities throw up interesting dynamics – the tag team division needs to be shaken up and it needs to happen now.
