Lucha Underground/WWE News: Turner Broadcasting getting back to wrestling with a new deal

Rey Mysterio Jr., one of Lucha Underground’s primary stars

Turner Broadcasting (TBS) were the only people who gave Vince McMahon and the WWF a run for their money, from the mid-90s to early 2000 when the Monday Night Wars period was going on. After WWF won the war and bought out WCW, Ted Turner has not dipped his toes into wrestling again. However, 15 years later, and it has finally happened.

Turner Broadcasting has issued a press release announcing that Lucha Underground will be on the air in Germany. Here is the schedule:

Starting: December 10th, 2016

Station: TNT Serie

Airing: Every Saturday night

Time: 10:40 p.m. local time

Announcers: Günter Zapf and Mike Ritter

The press release mentioned Johnny Mundo, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Alberto El Patron(Del Rio), Prince Puma, Fénix, Pentagón Jr., Sexy Star and Ivelisse. Del Rio is presumably mentioned, because they will air the show from the very beginning, and Mexico’s Greatest Export was featured on Season One.

This will make Germany the first country outside of the United States of America and Mexico, that Lucha Underground is expanding to. It is an interesting market, but with Turner Broadcasting, there is definitely no lack of funds by any means.

As mentioned above, Turner left a huge mark on the professional wrestling business, when he pumped in funds and took over WCW to compete with WWF. For 84 straight weeks, Monday Night Nitro defeated Raw in the ratings.

It was post-Montreal Screwjob and the rise of the Attitude Era and Stone Cold Steve Austin that saw WWF gain the ratings back and in big fashion.

For all we know, this could just be the first step of TBS dipping their toe into pro wrestling again. It comes 15 years later, but could this be the beginning of something?

Lucha Underground is, in fact, an all round different wrestling product from the others we see. It is not a promotion, it is created and produced as a television show, and crazy storylines with the supernatural very much exists in this different and critically acclaimed universe that is Lucha Underground.
