WWE News: Dave Meltzer calls Kenny Omega the "Modern Day Shawn Michaels"

G1 Climax 2016 winner Kenny Omega

Being compared to Shawn Michaels is no small feat. It requires a huge amount of considerable achievements to even be compared on the same level. However, Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer, didn’t hold back anything while comparing the 2016 G1 Climax winner Kenny Omega to Shawn Michaels.

Kenny Omega became the first ever Gaijin (Foreigner) this year to win the G1 Climax tournament.

For those who are not aware, the G1 Climax tournament is the biggest in New Japan Pro Wrestling, where the winner of the tournament gets a briefcase containing a contract for an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match at Wrestle Kingdom (NJPW’s Wrestlemania equivalent), which takes place on January 4th in the Tokyo Dome.

If Omega can successfully defend his title shot until then, he will likely face Kazuchika Okada (who is a Four-time and current IWGP Heavyweight Champion) in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom. If Omega successfully does so, then he will also be the first ever non-Japanese wrestler to wrestle in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom.

It will undoubtedly be the biggest match of his career, and this is what Meltzer had to say about it:

"This is a big match for Kenny Omega. He's not gonna have anything but a great match at this stage cause he...wants to prove...he's got that Shawn Michaels' thing in him right now and he's probably the Shawn Michaels of the business right now...in the sense of, not every night, but when he's in a big match he is bound and determined to prove he is the best guy in this entire business or he's going to die trying."

It can be assumed that Meltzer is not comparing their in-ring ability, but possibly their mindset during big matches, as both have a reputation for going out of their way to steal the show during such big stages, and one can only assume Omega will do so next year at Wrestle Kingdom.

Omega is also the leader of the Bullet Club. At this point, he has already surpassed the previous leaders of the Bullet Club, Finn Balor and AJ Styles. Omega has stated himself that he had been called by WWE three times last year for recruitment, but refused their offers.

If his stock value was already that high then, it is safe to say that as a G1 Climax winner, it would have been considerably raised already, and it will take a whole lot to woo Kenny Omega out of NJPW.
