WWE News: Goldberg confirmed for Royal Rumble 2017

The man that slayed the beast is the first confirmed entrant to the Royal Rumble

Although Goldberg was not advertised in advance for the Raw after Survivor Series, he opened the show. The promo saw him tease that he was done with wrestling, but he had said that Commissioner Stephanie McMahon had asked if he had “one last title run” left in him.

Since the Royal Rumble is where the Road to Wrestlemania begins, Goldberg confirmed that he would be participating in the 2017 Royal Rumble that will take place in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on January 29th.

With that, Goldberg officially became the first participant to enter the Royal Rumble match next year. Goldberg’s addition to the Pay-Per-View card (let alone the match) will be a huge boost in ticket sales, as WWE will be looking to get over 60,000 people to attend the event.

The Royal Rumble last took place in the grand stadium for the 1997 Royal Rumble, which saw hometown hero Shawn Michaels face Sycho Sid for the WWF Championship.

Goldberg’s chances of winning the match are unknown. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Goldberg and Brock Lesnar will be squaring off again, and “more than just once”.

Even before Goldberg had confirmed that he was going to be participating in the Royal Rumble match, Meltzer had said that his participation in the Rumble was a “given”, which will be followed by a Wrestlemania 33 match.

Meltzer said that Brock Lesnar himself pushed for Goldberg’s deal because he saw money in the entire scenario of Goldberg’s return.

Lesnar was reportedly originally booked to win their Survivor Series bout. Meltzer proceeded to say that the match was not shortened due to Goldberg tweaking his shoulder on the go-home Raw before Survivor Series, but was simply booked to help get Goldberg more over.
