WWE News: John Cena's return date announced

John Cena will return in Chicago

John Cena’s return date was announced on the latest episode of SmackDown Live. Cena is set to return in two weeks’ time, on the December 27th edition of Smackdown Live in Chicago. This will be Cena’s first appearance for the blue brand since October 9th at No Mercy, where he faced AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship.

Cena lost the match after being pinned by AJ Styles for the third time in four months, and then left to film the second season of American Grit. During this time he also landed the biggest non-WWE television role of his career, as he got to host Saturday Night Live.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter said that upon his return, Cena will be right back in the title picture against AJ Styles. The storyline of Cena pursuing his elusive 16th World Championship will continue, much to the delight of his fans.

Cena has been away from the main event scene for over two years now and has not been World Champion since SummerSlam 2014. Styles is set to face Dolph Ziggler on the final edition of SmackDown Live of 2016 for the WWE World Championship, so there is a chance that Cena may appear after the match – especially if Styles wins.

Cena had taken a one-month gap between SummerSlam and Backlash. While it was originally believed that he had gone to film American Grit, in reality he was kept aside for storyline purposes, while also performing in the overseas tours of the Raw brand.

He had come back the night after Backlash to confront Styles and to announce his intention to become a 16-time World Champion.
