Summerslam 2016: 5 Moments You Might Have Missed

With the win, Nikki Bella sends a message to all of SmackDown Live's women: She's back and better than ever.
Nikki Bella returned to a great ovation

This PPV was hyped for many reasons and the match card looked quite packed. The majority of the hype went to the Lesnar – Orton feud, with Cena taking on Styles and the Universal Championship debuting as the other bouts to look forward to.

So, in the midst of all this starry stuff, some moments are bound to take a backseat even if they were relevant and provided some character development or storyline development or maybe even brand development.

Summerslam was back to Brooklyn and Lesnar was back in the main event spot to demolish Orton, but here are the other moments that you might have missed amidst all the hype and the hoopla.

#5 The botch or the storyline?

Charlotte drops Sasha across all three ropes, injuring the champion's back.
This could have been a hit or miss moment

This may seem sudden and like a typical main roster shtick, but Charlotte winning back the title a few weeks after she lost it to Banks may just be the right call. In NXT, once you lose the title you lose it mostly for good to get promoted to the main roster.

But there is no going up anywhere once you’re in the main roster- the ‘big league’. Charlotte and Banks are the present of the division which is soon going to be graced by Bayley who seemingly gave her goodbye performance at Takeover Brooklyn II.

She may just have a passing the torch match against Ember Moon, but Bayley is soon going to be promoted. For sure.

This championship bout was presented as a bad blood feud and it began viciously eventually leading to both trading slaps. What seemed like a botch when Charlotte dropped Banks on the top turnbuckle was made it into a part of the story since WWE immediately put it on social media emphasizing the moment.

What got the audience really interested was after Charlotte went for Razor’s edge from the second rope and Banks countered it to a hurricanrana.

The match was good, as was expected. Banks kept on trying to lock the bank statement until it became the reason for her reign’s impending doom. Charlotte countered it to put Banks shoulders on the match for the pin and win.

#4 Smackdown Women’s Bout

The smackdown Women’s Division had its own cool moments

Earlier speculated to be relegated to the pre- show, this match made it to the main card and it had some very hilarious moments.

Eva Marie couldn’t make it because of the 30 day suspension, but the storyline is that she’s exhausted and suffering from anxiety due to the hostile reception she gets from fans. Mentioning that Eva Marie’s vacationing in the British Isles got some laughs.

Well, the heels had a back-up plan- someone who’s thrived as a heel for a long time to become one of the most formidable wrestlers in the women’s division. Nikki Bella made a triumphant comeback.

It was triumphant even before she scored the pin for her team since the Brooklyn audience was elated to see her back.

The match was mostly okay but the only point keeping it interesting was Bella’s return. She won with her new finisher since The Rack Attack will be detrimental to her recovery.

The ending sequence where the referee raised Bella’s hand after her victory was partly hilarious, as he didn’t wait for Alexa Bliss to be besides her team. Bliss aptly pushed the referee and told him off and then proceeded to celebrate with her team.

#3 Too Sweet

These three met someone they know pretty well backstage at Summerslam

This PPV was stacked with matches and it was expected of backstage segments to get lost in the shuffle, but there was one moment that will stand out, if it wasn’t missed.

Summerslam was a sweet reunion for The Club with Smackdown’s AJ Styles meeting his friends Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. But it was turned into a ‘Too Sweet’ moment briefly when Finn Balor also made his way backstage to cross paths with them three.

They tried to get him to do their hand gesture called the ‘Too Sweet’ but Balor gave it a miss; he was tempted but babyfaces be babyfaces.

This has been one of the most awaited moments played out briefly for everyone’s delight. Only, it was quite short and again, too sweet.

#4 Zayn-iac

Zayn and Neville had a pre- show tag team match

Sami Zayn made it to Summerslam and it wasn’t on the main card so you many have missed his match against the Dudley Boys where he teamed up with Neville.

Much like his arch nemesis Kevin Owens, this was an unlikely match he was in but while Owens’ match made it to the main card where he faced the uber over Enzo and Cass in their hometown, he prevented them from getting a victory.

Party-poopers.

Zayn also scored a victory in his tag match but that was put out there as a major afterthought. Surely, there are much more impactful things that Zayn could have been involved with but hey, it’s a W at the end of the day at Summerslam.

#5 One of Seven

Sheamus feels the power of a Cesaro Swing.
Sheamus and Cesaro during their first of seven bouts

Another match relegated to the pre- show was a bout that Mick Foley gave a purpose to. Cesaro and Sheamus faced each other in the first of seven match ups and the Celtic warrior came off with a victory.

There are chances of you giving it a miss but watch out for the beautiful language that these two guys conveyed – the wrestling language. Cesaro, especially, makes wrestling look so beautiful.

He had one of his moments where he performed a cross body from the top rope. Eventually, his tribute to Tyson Kidd with the Sharpshooter was addressed with a poke in the eye from Sheamus who then won with a Brogue kick.
