Top 5 WWE rumours of the week and analysis: 17 October, 2016

Will Strowman finally get better competition?

Soaking up rumours and speculating about them, is something that all wrestling fans out there love to do. And as always, the WWE fan base was buzzing about a string of things throughout the past week.

WWE’s announcement of Goldberg’s return has shaken things up on the internet. There were also talks about the latest hiatus that John Cena is planning to take after No Mercy, which was masterfully hidden by WWE with James Ellsworth.

Chris Jericho also featured in an interesting position in the rumour mill. And as always, we are going to list down the top rumours and look at their potential impact on the WWE landscape.

#5 No long term plan for Goldberg

One time thing

The current plan is for Goldberg to face off against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Both the superstars are unlikely to cross paths till the pay-per-view but then again the plans could change.

As things stand, Goldberg does not feature in WWE’s long term plans. The Survivor Series match is supposed to be a one-time thing unless Goldberg manages to attract tonnes of fanfare.

There is also no news on how WWE would book the match going forward and it could go either way. No matter how the company books it, expect negative comments to arise as the fans wouldn’t want to see both the superstars suffer a defeat.

#4 Becky Lynch, Paige and Survivor Series rumours

Lynch to keep the title

Becky Lynch has been out of action due to injury and if we go by the rumours, she is not expected to return before her match with Alexa Bliss on November 8. The title is going to remain with Becky for the time being.

Paige was also a talking point in the rumour mill as she seems to be searching for a way out of WWE. Paige, however, is trying to take the legal path and her social media activity regarding the topic is not intended to make WWE release her.

Lastly, the traditional Survivor Series matches that WWE is planning could force certain wrestlers to do double duty.

#3 Braun Strowman’s push will lead to a huge debut

Samoa Joe coming to stop him?

Braun Strowman has been going on a squash party ever since the brand split.

WWE has been feeding him with local jobbers throughout the journey as well. Strowman, however, finally found some direction recently when he went up and asked for better competition. Mick Foley gave him a handicap match after this demand which resulted in another squash.

Rumours suggest that this ongoing storyline would result in the debut of an NXT champion. The first set of rumours suggests that it would be Samoa Joe who would make his debut where there are also rumours about the pick going to Nakamura as Vince would want to improve the Network subscriptions in Japan.

#2 Updates on the status of John Cena

Cena could lead Team SmackDown

John Cena was on the losing side of the No Mercy main event. From the looks of it, he is set to take another hiatus from the company. Cena has been taking a lighter schedule for quite some time now and the latest hiatus could see him miss the road to Survivor Series.

The Cenation leader, however, is booked for Survivor Series but does not have a clear cut feud going into the pay-per-view.

Rumours suggest that Cena could be leading Team SmackDown at Survivor Series against Team Raw. His pursuit of Ric Flair’s record is expected to resume after this. Cena would be feuding with AJ Styles from the looks of it, meaning that Ambrose won’t be taking the gold away from Styles.

#1 Chris Jericho to be special guest referee

Special guest referee?

Chris Jericho might’ve lost his match against Seth Rollins on Raw, but he might feature in the Hell in a Cell match between Rollins and Owens at Hell in a Cell. There were rumours that suggested a potential feud between Owens and Jericho before the year comes to an end and the initiation of the same could come at Hell in a Cell.

WWE might be looking to add Jericho as a special guest referee for the title match at Hell in a Cell, and if it happens, it is bound to make the match more exciting. WWE could incorporate a turn from either Owens or Jericho in such a situation.
