The “Unexpected Cena” memes shot into popularity after the John Cena prank call video became viral. It became a mainstay meme where every video ended in a twist with “JOHN CENA” in a loud voice followed by his theme song in WWE. John Cena was recently at Salt Lake Comic Con(SLCC), and he was finally asked about his reaction to the Unexpected Cena memes. His reaction was as follows:
John Cena is undoubtedly transitioning into a very different role with the WWE. He helped carry the company as its face for the last 11 years or so, and now his hard work has earned him a lighter schedule with WWE. He has now entered the mainstream world, hosting seasons of television shows, hosting multiple award shows, being a guest on talk shows,etc. He has been active in WWE this year only for the last 4 months or so. Taking the last month where he was off television, that makes it 3.
Also, he has more or less stepped away from the long term main event scene. Though he is set to square off against AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match in the main event of No Mercy for the WWE World Championship, it is almost a sure fact that he will not win the title as he will be off for the rest of the year after the PPV to film American Grit season 2.
It is being rumoured that John Cena is set to face The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33 if things work out. The two were set to face off this year at Wrestlemania 32 in what was supposed to be The Phenom’s last bout. However, Cena got injured at the beginning of the year with a torn rotator cuff. If they do face off at Wrestlemania 33, then it will more than likely be the main event of Wrestlemania 33. There would be no opponent more perfect for Undertaker’s final match than John Cena.
If this remains as the schedule, then it looks like John Cena won’t be getting the elusive 16th World Championship until next year after Wrestlemania at the earliest. The 16th world title would definitely be apt for a Summerslam or a Wrestlemania moment and it remains to be seen when and if this happens.
