Wrestlemania X - Review

Owen Hart defeated his brother, the legend Bret Hart!

Owen Hart defeated his brother, the legend Bret Hart!

Opening Match: Owen Hart defeated Bret Hart with a roll-up reversal.

Thoughts: This was one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches ever, and definitely the best Wrestlemania opener. The hype for this match was very high, as were the expectations, and the two brothers delivered big time. What made this match even more memorable is that Owen Hart won in a huge upset. I don’t think anyone in their right minds expected him to beat Bret Hart that night, as Owen was not even thought of as being in Bret’s class at the time (Which I Disagree! ).

The Harts put on a clinic in mat wrestling, selling and psychology and single handedly made the show awesome. 10/10, 20 minutes of Pure Wrestling Excellence and one of the top 10′s of all time.

Bam Bam Bigelow & Luna Vachon vs Doink & Dink (Bigelow pinned Doink with a splash.)

Thoughts: As silly as this match was, it was probably a necessary one to be a breather for the Crowd. I’d rate it 3 on10.

Randy Savage vs Crush in a Falls Count Anywhere match (Savage beat Crush by hog tying him in the backstage area.)

Thoughts: This was the end of the line for one of the most charismatic WWF performers of all time. The match was okay but the crowd was jacked in Savage’s favour and gave him a great ovation when he finally defeated Crush to cap off their lengthy feud. It was nice to see Vince treat a legend as such, with a big win on a big show. A good match, hence the 7/10 rating.

Alundra Blayze vs Lelani Kai to retain WWF Women’s Title ( Blayze pinned Leilani Kai with a German Suplex.)

Thoughts: Not much here as this was just a way to showcase the rebirth of the Women’s division. A rating of 3 on 10.

Men on a Mission (MoM) defeated the Quebecers by countout to retain the WWF Tag Team Titles.

Thoughts: A decent match that was then wrecked by the manager of the Quebecers, as he pulled his team out of the ring, resulting in win by countout for the Men on a Mission. A generous rating of 7 on 10 for this match.

Yokozuna defeated Lex Luger by disqualification to retain the WWF Championship.

A farcical match!

A farcical match!

Thoughts: This match was a pure waste of time. Hence the rating of 4/10.

Earthquake defeated Adam Bomb with a splash.

Thoughts: 33 seconds and the match was over.

Razor Ramon (Scott Hall) vs Shawn Michaels in a ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental Title (Ramon retained the title when he climbed the ladder and retrieved the belt.)

Ladder match classic!!

Ladder match classic!!

Thoughts: This match had it all: athleticism, wrestling, drama, tension, historical meaning and was just flat out entertaining. If you haven’t seen it, see it and if you have, see it again. The 2nd best inter-continental title match after the one between Bret Hart and the British Bulldog at Summerslam 92.

This match helped WWF turn the corner and reinvent itself. The crowd was on their feet and quite loud for the entire match, and every time either man was about to grab the belts, the other would push the ladder over. This was a match for the ages that made the careers of both men, in particular Michaels, whose attitude and work ethic was in question going into this match. No question, 10/10.

Bret Hart defeated Yokozuna to win WWF World Title when Yokozuna fell off the ropes attempting a Bonsai Drop.

Bret Hart got his revenge!

Bret Hart got his revenge!

Thoughts: An okay match that was carried to levels of awesomeness due to it being a rematch of Wrestlemania IX. Bret Hart got his payback, and Owen Hart was left staring jealously at Bret Hart making this one of the most memorable PPV main events ever.

Final Thoughts: It would be a while before we’ll ever see that again, 2 bona-fide classics in one show. Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, and Owen Hart jumped into the stratosphere with this show, and Bret Hart cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats, again doing double duty. There were some awful moments but they were covered by two of the greatest matches ever and a lasting tribute to a true legend, Randy “Macho Man” Avage.
