WWE Backlash 2016: Best and Worst of the PPV

The era of the soccer mom has begun
The era of the soccer mom has begun

WWE Backlash wasn’t the best PPV this year. Not by a long shot. But with the limited resources that WWE had, they pulled off a decent show and contrary to their recent behavior, actually gave fans results they wanted.

When was the last time a Pay-Per-View ended with the fans actually happy for once? Also, the main event and the Intercontinental championship matches were off the charts.. Anyway, there’s a lot to talk about from this show which came to us from The Coliseum from Richmond, Virginia. So let's get right to it.

THE GOOD: Here's what we liked about today’s Pay-Per-View

1: Smackdown Live is now ‘phenomenal’

A.J. Styles can take Smackdown to new heights
A.J. Styles can take Smackdown to new heights

After defeating John Cena at Summerslam, A.J. Styles has been calling himself ‘the face that runs the place’. And right now he truly is the face that runs the place. Ambrose and Styles put on a modern day classic, and even Ambrose wrestled his best match in a long, long time.

If we may take some liberties, let's say that we’re glad that the best wrestler in the world is now finally the champion of the world’s largest wrestling empire in the whole world. And Ambrose, who had fallen from grace in the eyes of wrestling fans because of the quality of his in-ring work also had a chance to shine. We’re sure their rematch will be really phenomenal too.

2: Heath Slater is signed baybay

They’re just 2 men, in a 2 man band

Rhyno and Heath Slater are the inaugural Smackdown Live tag team champions. While some may argue that it devalues the title, we believe that considering the fact that they’re so over with the crowd, it’s probably the right choice.

With due apologies to Dean Ambrose, Heath Slater is the top babyface on Smackdown, and his story is that of rising from the bottom of the barrel to the very summit.

3: Becky Lynch is finally the Women’s Champion

Becky Balboa indeed

This was the show of the underdogs. Of course, Becky Lynch has been as instrumental in the Women’s Revolution as Charlotte and Sasha Banks, but she’d never had her moment. Until now. This orange haired lass-kicker is now the face of the Smackdown Women’s Division. We’re sure she’s going to make us all very, very proud.

4: The Miz- Daniel Bryan feud is far from over

The Miz imitated Daniel Bryan at several points today
The Miz imitated Daniel Bryan at several points today

The Miz and Dolph Ziggler had a great match for the Intercontinental Championship on tonight’s show. But that isn’t the main point to note here. There's been no hotter angle than the tension between The Miz-Daniel Bryan, after Miz cut a promo on Bryan, on ‘Talking Smack’ a few weeks ago. WWE did not bring up the angle for a while, until now.

With a backstage segment, and The Miz imitating Daniel Bryan at several points during the match, with his submission holds and the drop kicks into the corner; it looks like we’re going to see a long feud between the General Manager and the IC Champion. As for The Miz winning here, we suppose we’re fine.

5: Some superstars got a new look

Gone are the bright colors of the Usos

The Usos won't ‘play hard in the paint’ anymore. They’ve adopted a more serious, somber look after going heel(following their beat down on American Alpha). We believe it gives them new life because their old act was getting stale. Alexa Bliss has also adopted the Harley Quinn look, and it suits her well; as opposed to the generic female heel thing she did, in our opinion. We’re glad that the WWE is trying something new.

THE BAD: Of course, this show was far from perfect

1: WWE’s big mistake in burying Bray Wyatt

When was the last time we saw Bray win at a PPV?

Because of Randy Orton’s legitimate concussion injury, Kane was brought in to face Bray Wyatt. We thought to ourselves- what better chance to push Bray, than for him to score a comprehensive victory over Kane?

However, our hopes were soon dashed to the ground, as Randy Orton would interfere and deliver the RKO to Wyatt. This would lead to Kane picking up a victory. Where does Wyatt go from here? He's pretty much lost to everyone on PPV He didn’t even feature on the Summerslam card. WWE is wasting this talent. WWE’s mistake in handling Bray is all to be seen.

2: Lack of depth on the Smackdown roster

You can't see me...for a while

John Cena is gone. Randy Orton is injured. American Alpha have a (kayfabe) injury. Smackdown desperately needs someone to carry the brand in their absence. The fact that Kane was brought in to wrestle so high up in this pay-per-view proves how thin the roster is, as of now.

IN CONCLUSION, Backlash 2016 was a pretty solid 7/10 show with some great moments. Let’s make you happier. Here’s the gorgeous Alexa Bliss in her new avatar.
