Sam Roberts' Wrestling Podcast became ‘Rated R’ when the WWE Hall of Famer, Edge appeared on the interview section of the podcast. A large part of the interview was based on a difficult time in Edge’s career when he became involved in a love triangle with Matt Hardy and Lita.
Edge said that he understood the decision from a business perspective to put the controversial issue on television for all to see. He said that the storyline was as real as it gets, and often during promos, his real feelings came up to the surface when the cameras were rolling.
The life imitating art storyline was triggered when Matt Hardy was injured. Matt’s girlfriend at that time, Lita was then forced to travel alone for the shows while Matt recovered. She found a friend and companion in Edge and the two got involved. When Matt came to know about this, he was furious and this led to a chain of events that set up the feud.
Edge confessed that the feud with Matt was the most stressful period of his otherwise illustrious career. He was seen as the villain that stole a man’s girlfriend and was met with a chorus of boos and chants of “You screwed Matt” in every arena that he went.
Giving us an insight into his mind the ‘Rated R’ superstar said:
“I mean, it was difficult. Without a doubt. And I'd say that was probably, like, the most stressful point of my career, just from a personally taxing standpoint. But I was like, 'okay, see it through, get passed it,' and, really, my mindset was, 'we're here now, so I'm going to use this and try if you want to think you know me, I'm going to use this to fuel, if you want to hate me, I'll give you reasons.'”
After making up his mind, Edge embraced his heel persona and mocked the same crowds that booed him. He said that he often felt that it was Lita and him against the world. So when he walked out to the ring he portrayed the exact same thing.
Edge also spoke about the 15 time World Champion, John Cena. He said that it was his feud with Cena that made him the superstar we all know and love today. He said that the WWE creative had placed his trust on him and he hit it out of the park. Gradually he took charge of the SmackDown roster while John worked his way to the top of the RAW roster.
