WWE News: Kevin Owens wins WWE Universal Championship after Triple H interferes

Kevin Owens is the new WWE Universal Champion

Tonight's episode of WWE RAW has just ended and the HUGE news from the night is the return of Triple H for the first time since WrestleMania 32 and that we have a new WWE Universal Champion - none other than the 'Prizefighter', Kevin Owens.

The Fatal-4-Way match was well on its way with Big Cass being the first one eliminated before Triple H made his unexpected return to Pedigree Roman Reigns outside the ring. He then rolled Roman back into the ring and implored Seth to cover him, which saw Roman eliminated.

He then walked over to where Kevin Owens was laid out and rolled Owens back into the ring too. At this point, it looked like he was helping his former protege win the WWE Universal Championship as HHH climbed back into the ring.

It was at this time that we got one of the biggest swerves in recent WWE history with Triple H turning on his protege and Pedigree-ing him out of nowhere. He then gestured a surprised Kevin Owens to cover Rollins for the pinfall.

Both Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley looked flabbergasted on the outside at Triple H’s actions. Clearly, neither of them had seen him interfering or Kevin Owens winning. For Owens, this was the culmination of a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice. The former NXT Champion has finally won a world championship on the main roster, something that seemed far-fetched even a week ago when he was in the opening tag match at SummerSlam.

However, Finn Balor’s injury changed all that and the fatal-4-way match was announced for the new Universal Champion, after Balor had to vacate the championship due to injury. Owens qualified for the match last week but he was still seen as the underdog with Rollins and Reigns in the match. What no one saw coming was Triple H’s reemergence to take out Roman Reigns, Even more surprising was the fact that ‘The Game’ turned on his former protege in favour of Kevin Owens. We all know that Owens is a Triple H guy behind the scenes but this is the first time we’ve seen any indication on-screen.

The WWE has been high on Owens since his main roster debut where he beat John Cena clean and this is further indication that Owens is the man to the face of the new era. Finn Balor’s loss is clearly Owens’ gain.
