The upcoming NXT Takeover: Toronto event scheduled to take place on November 19th, 2016, would see the return of former WWE Divas Champion Mickie James to the WWE. The announcement that was made at the recent NXT tapings has amped up the excitement levels for the usually solid Takeover specials. As announced, Mickie James would face WWE NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at the event in Toronto for the title.
While a majority of the fanbase at Full Sail University and the WWE Universe are quite excited about the return, Mickie James wasn’t the first preference, to begin with. According to reports, WWE Legend and former Women’s Champion, Trish Stratus was the original choice to go up against Japenese sensation Asuka at the special, but the plan had to be dropped after she got pregnant.
The 7-time Women’s Champion was the first choice because she hails from Canada and the event would have benefitted more from a homegrown legend in action.
Trish’s recent pregnancy announcement led to WWE nixing the plans of her in-ring return and WWE instead approached Mickie James for the role. Supporting reports state that Trish was supposed to work a match at Takeover and a couple of more dates next year. After the news of her pregnancy broke out, WWE turned towards the former TNA Knockout, who accepted the proposition with open arms.
It’s expected that Mickie James would be sticking around for some more time after her Takeover match and would fulfill the obligations that were originally conferred upon Trish Stratus. Mickie James’ last match was for Global Force Wrestling on January 22 nd in a losing effort against Kimber Lee and Christina Von Eerie for the GFW Women’s Championship.
Her last WWE match before getting released was a tag team contest on SmackDown, where she teamed up with Beth Phoenix to take on Michelle McCool and Layla. Her WWE career ended on a losing note after she ate the pin at the hands of Layla. Her return match against Asuka is expected to end the same way as the NXT Women’s Champion isn't expected to drop the title anytime soon.
No word on whether the former TNA Knockout would be moving up to the main roster. As a matter of fact, would you like to see her return to RAW or SmackDown?
