WWE Rumors: John Cena to replace Dean Ambrose in SmackDown Live main event scene

The main event scene of Smackdown Live has primarily revolved around Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current plans for the main event scene on SmackDown Live is to have John Cena back in the picture against AJ Styles. Cena returns at Madison Square Garden in their December 26th house show. He is expected to start working regularly from that point on.

The theme of the storyline is going to continue about John Cena attempting to tie Ric Flair’s record of 16th World Championships.

As for Dean Ambrose, the report stated that the plan for him is to get into the Intercontinental Championship picture against The Miz. Dolph Ziggler too was chasing the world title at Summerslam but went to the Intercontinental Championship picture, after he lost to then-champion Dean Ambrose.

The feud ended up elevating the Intercontinental Championship in the eyes of the fans. Around this time last year, Ambrose was involved in the Intercontinental Championship picture, where he was chasing the title against then-Champion Kevin Owens.

Ambrose has been one of the most subtly protected characters in 2016, taking very few clean pinfalls. It will be interesting to see how his feud against The Miz will play out. He had faced The Hollywood A-Lister on the most recent episode of SmackDown Live, where he was defeated due to an unintentional distraction by James Ellsworth.

John Cena and AJ Styles facing off once more could lead to a possible third singles match between them at the Royal Rumble. This would dispell rumours of AJ Styles possibly facing The Undertaker. However, it’s not certain as The Undertaker did announce his return, and could very likely be in the main event picture as well.

There are now seven episodes of SmackDown Live left, out of which John Cena will be in five of them. His rumoured bout at Wrestlemania 33 is against The Undertaker. The bout between the two icons was confirmed by various sources to be at Wrestlemania 32, but John Cena had gotten injured at the beginning of 2016, taking him out of action for five months.

The final stop for SmackDown Live before Wrestlemania 33 is Elimination Chamber. It is likely to be the pay-per-view where the marquee World Championship match of SmackDown Live will be set for Wrestlemania 33. If not, it will surely determine who the champion is walking into the grandest stage of them all.
