WWE Rumours: Huge potential WrestleMania 33 plans for John Cena

John Cena at the Wrestlemania 33 announcement press conference earlier this year

It has been rumored since 2014 that John Cena and The Undertaker are set to face each other for The Deadman’s final bout. There is no doubt that John Cena is the perfect final opponent for him, as the two pro wrestling icons have not yet had their epic Wrestlemania encounter. All roads seemed to have been leading to the two titans clashing at Wrestlemania 32. Unfortunately, this plan had to be scrapped as John Cena obtained a torn rotator cuff injury in January that kept him out for five full months.

The Undertaker was then put into a program with a returning Shane McMahon. While the return of Shane McMahon was pleasant and exciting, the storyline as a whole didn’t make much sense and the payoff of the match and stipulation didn’t come to play, rendering the match essentially useless. There were rumors after that that The Deadman said he was officially retired.

However, that is seemingly something seen every year but never turns out to be true. It was said that the plan is still to have the long-awaited John Cena vs Undertaker match. If this match does come to fruition, it will most likely be the main event of Wrestlemania 33.

However, CageSideSeats is now reporting that there are two plans written in for John Cena’s Wrestlemania 33 match: The Undertaker retirement match, or if Undertaker is retired, Cena’s 16th world championship win, tying Ric Flair’s record.

There is no word on who the Champion will be if Cena has the latter match next year at the grandest stage of them all, but it is highly possible that Cena vs AJ Styles 3 could be the bout with Cena finally overcoming Styles.

Cena is set to face AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose at No Mercy in a triple threat match for the WWE World Championship. It is unlikely Cena will walk out with the title for two reasons: they wouldn’t blow off his 16th world title win at No Mercy, and secondly, he is taking a hiatus until the end of the year to film American Grit season 2.

Most fans believe that Cena should face Undertaker as he is the perfect opponent for The Phenom’s swan song in the WWE. Perhaps after Royal Rumble next year, the two titans will finally go head to head, one last time.
